I usually wash my own by hand, but my girlfriend does the rest with our dish washer.
But a long time ago when I lived with room mates. 3 single guys. One was my brother and the other one is still my best friend of 19 years. We lived together for 7 years with the messy dish issue at the beginning but got resolved really quick.
This was the rule: If any dish or pots and pans were not washed an hour after the were used, all dishes including pots and pans would end up in the users bed. This seemed to work very well.
Cant tell you how many times i came home with a girl and we jumped into my bed in the dark, to discover that all of the pots, pans and dishes i used, with the water still in them, in my bad and all over me and my date. Was so pissed, but now when we talk about it, it makes for great comedy.
