need server opinions

i'm thinking about getting an Xserve, anyone test these out yet?
if you have no clue what i'm talking about

i think the only problem would be getting the HD's to keep up with the rest of the system, what do you guys think?

why not buy a normal server then.. so you can handle anything. don't get some floofy mac unless you live in san francisco, enjoy rollerblading and your day job is a hairstylist.

php/mysql guru. hosting, coding, all that jazz.

because they make transparent computers as their last resort to try to sucker in innocent prissy consumers into buying their non-PC systems. the only thing macs may be good for is graphics, music/video recording/editing, and recording your boyfriend's phone numbers in some MacBathHouseScheduler(tm) program..

Seriously though, most average servers can adequately handle even porn traffic so you are better off not paying that 300% markup that is put on the Mac equipment. It looks very cool though, but why would you NEED a cool looking server? You don't. Buy 2 servers for what that costs!

I've trusted my sites to them for over a decade...

dude i didn't ask for a platform war, i asked what you thought of the server.

and last time i checked apple did a great job of sucking in ppl with the iMac, when is the last time compaq or dell actually won adwards for the way thier computers look?

yopu just said that macs are good for graphics, music and video stuff (given they aren't an SGI) so who is to say they won't be the future big swinging dicks of the server biz, come on now you can't be that stupid hell they aren't Cray supercomputers but it's as close as my budget is gonna allow

it's true that compaq and dell don't win awards for their designs. maybe it's because they're too busy producing the top selling pc's on the market? when you're getting a computer (even moreso for a server) you *must* look for function over form. your server should look as plain as possible. it's there to SERVE.. not look pretty.

you should be able to buy decent equipment for a low price nowadays anyway. but hey, you could be the pioneer of the macintosh server market, give it a try

yea but if you look at when the recession was in a big slump you'll see oinly 2 computer companies were actually making a profit apple and dell, dell because of the price wars and apple because of design and easy of use. and don't be fooled i looked the system over a good bit, management software seems really nice, and since i already have alot of expierience with Mac OS X server it can get things done faster then i would on a freebsd or redhat server, i just think of the look as an extra added bonus

When your buy something from apple your paying 1K for the apple logo on the front. =P

If you want a server appliance get a Raq550. I use to hate them after getting a raq3i myself 2 years ago. (Way over expensive with outdated hardware) They seemed to have changed their ways. Starting at $1700
