Have you done this? I'm researching it at the moment. Considering it.

Yes, I did this over 5 years ago and it's a great method. It's cheaper and less time consuming. You go to Lowe's and buy X amount of bags of Salt and throw it in the pool.

Cheap bastards. Pay someone $40 a month to take care of you pool.

Easier? I never lifted a finger for my pool when I lived in Phoenix. Once a week a guy would come in an take care of it. It was great.

Only $40/mo to get someone to maintain your pool? Hmm...

I had a salt water pool in Maui, it's the only way to go.... water is cleaner, fresher, and doesn't leave you coated with that nasty chlorine smell.

The cells are a little pricey but is expected. Every year (at least I have to) they need to be cleaned in a muriatic acid bath

I have a salt system...works great. But I'm thinking about changing over to a UV system. The salt system generates chlorine from the salt, then the chlorine turns back into salt and is regenerated over and over. And the salt level is so low that you can't even notice it in your pool...it's not like swimming in the ocean or anything.

But the UV systems don't make chlorine at all. Matter of fact there is NO chlorine involved in any manner. It's simply a UV light inline with the plumbing from your pump. And it's tuned to kill all the bacteria and algae, etc. in the water. It's the system that is used now for the Olympics. No chemicals at all.

Thats cool Robbie. Does that also allow your pool to act like a fresh water reserve for emergencies? Just well filtered water it seems like.

Chlorine is very unhealthy even in small amounts. 20 years from now people are going to look back and think were were crazy for soaking in this toxin.

I switched to salt and love it. Way easier to maintain and cleaner more clear water.

Silly question, but is the water still clear if you convert to a salt water system?

Absolutely...I mean, I wouldn't want to drink it under normal circumstances..but in an emergency you could.
