Properly customized and in conjunction with WP it does everything Facebook does. And then some more. So how exactly does it suck? I can mention no less than 20 features a WP+BP install may have that Facebook doesn't have. Hey, let's make it at least 30. And I'm talking about core functions, not just bells and whistles
What most people seems to forget is that WP is an ENGINE which has a lot of uses. If you don't know how to use that engine, you may end with a Pinto. If you know how to use it, you may end with a F1.
Both WP and BuddyPress have the most simple and user friendly features as default. Nothing complicated, a little over a Pinto, just not much more than that. The features 99.99% of people want and will use.
And I'm talking about BP+WP because it's a time saver, BP is just a plugin using WP engine, I could do exactly the same with WP alone. And I'm comparing it to Facebook, not to some lame FB clone script, otherwise it would be like comparing a nuclear weapon to a green pea, there's not even a relation (and yes, I had to convert from phpFox to WP because phpFox, which happens to be the best after WP, is way too limited)
So, in any case, a proper assertion would be: "I have no idea how to unleash its power. I might agree here, although the default one is pretty decent IMHO. The beauty of WP is you have a couple million layouts to choose from. If you think those layouts suck, then... YOU CAN DO YOUR OWN!!!! (as opposed to be constrained to a few customization options like in 99.99% of scripts)

The point is nobody mentioned a good "out of the box" script, while WP is, hands down, 1000x times better than ANY other script. You might need to tune up? Maybe. But think about this: a) MAYBE you won't need to change it, depending on your needs ; b) YOU HAVE THE OPTION TO DO IT!!!!! (as opposed as you get some crap and bear with it) and last but not least: I don't know of ANY successful company that uses "out of the box" solution, they all have needs and requests that need customization. Off the helve scripts are for people who doesn't have any special request. Again, Business 101. It's like saying " I found this great amazing office for rent, the price is incredible, the location is perfect, but I don't like the paint color, so... IT SUCKS!"

That is a shame! Lot´s of security holes we don´t like ... I have been looking now a little bit at both phpfox and SocialEngine, and both looks to have all the features I want - and then some. Not too expensive either. SocialEngine will be around $450 with the plugins needed. phpFox is $299 included all plugins.
Hope someone can throw in a review and/or share links to sites they have made using any of these scripts

I have been looking now a little bit at both phpfox and SocialEngine, and both looks to have all the features I want - and then some. Not too expensive either. SocialEngine will be around $450 with the plugins needed. phpFox is $299 included all plugins.

I think you may have responded in another thread about me asking for a good programmer. No programmer wanted to touch phpfox because it is a mess... had another script totally reworked and it also was a mess. Code is sloppy, security issues, just overall poor script... all of themComment

Yeah, I see many people recommending this WP/BP. This is a script that I am familiar with, so that would be an advantage for sure, since I am VERY impatience when it comes to learning new scripts
I guess now, at least for me, it is between WP/BP (free) and socialengine.net.
