people at sea level are exposed to ~12mrems of background radiation per month. A single cross-country flight will expose you to ~5mrems of radiation. Make the flight back and you've pretty much exposed yourself to a months normal radiation dose in just a few hours.
Of course, you don't worry for pilots or flight stewards/stewardesses though
