Think how interesting a set of thermal images would be on a house like that. You might be able to pinpoint where the largest percentage of your heat is escaping.

Mostly the roof and the windows. We've got 35 windows and some of them are the original glass.
The problem here is that our houses don't cost much, but we pay out the ass in taxes. Some of the highest, if not the highest in the country.
So say you paid $65k for your almost 4500 square ft of living space, basement and attic...it's really not all that cost effective to put $30k into bringing it up to date. Especially if you're sick of living in the "hood" and don't want your kids to be speaking urban slang by the time they're 5. We'd be extremely lucky to get $20k in added value to the house...any more than that would put it out of the range of the rest of the houses in the area.
The house we live in, my girl bought before we got together. We have a rental property that is a similar house built around the same time. That one, we has been updated mostly due to it being a rental...but it more than pays for itself.

I was thinking more along the lines of finding areas where quick inexpensive repairs/insulation could be preformed. A few spots that might immediately be cost effective to work on.

Electric: $80
Water: $6
Internet: $120 (got the good package)
Then every couple months some guy shows up at the house, looking for $0.50 for trash collection. Not sure if he's legit, or just some asshole looking for beer money, but whatever.Last edited by Kiopa_Matt; 03-14-2011, 08:12 AM.xMarkPro -- Ultimate Blog Network Management

If there's a cheap and easy option, we've done it. I spend 2 days each fall cover every single window in plastic sheeting.I was thinking more along the lines of finding areas where quick inexpensive repairs/insulation could be preformed. I have a 4BR, 2000 square foot house that is terrible on energy efficiency.
My gas/electric is something like $500.00 mo. this year, up from around 375.00 last.
My three month water bill is something like $80-100.00.Comment

Adding windows helps
Ours total is less than your electric bill is alone... I'm pretty ours doesn't reach that, in total, even in the summer months.

I live in FL, USA. Until 2010 was paying average $200 a month power. They raised the rates towards the end of 09 and now I hardly ever see a bill below $300. Was really bummed when we put in a new energy efficient A/C unit a few months ago. The new unit is nice to have, but it didn't make a dent in the bill.Comment

Up in Montreal we get reamed in the winter, I pay about $450/mo when the snow falls and in the summer roughly $150/mo, it would be lower but we heat the pool quite a bit.Kenny -at- YourPaysitePartner.com

I'm pretty close to that as well.
2500sq. ft. home (2-story, which adds to the AC/Heating cost)
Electric = $150-$275, depending on the time of year
Water = $55-70
It is pertinent to note that I have all energy star appliances, double pane windows, 18" of blown insulation in the attic, and all door/window/vent seals are very tight.
I have the heater set to kick on if it drops below 67, and the a/c set to kick on if it goes above 75. Also, whenever the ambient temperature outside is within those two ranges, I totally shutdown the system and just open windows during the day for fresh air.Comment

My NJ studio's gas and electric runs around $400 p/month.
1,500 sq ft with 12 ft ceilings, in an old brick building built in the 1800's - so it is not very well insulated.
Sometimes as high as $600 in the winter, or as low as $200 during the easy months - but overall an average of $400 p/month.Comment

4 bedroom house, 90 years old,
annual gas ?800
annual electricity ?900
annual water ?700 (frikken garden!)
annual internet/phone ?300
don't see the point in providing monthly totals as everything is season-related eg our gas is 100% for heating, so in a few weeks it's ready to go off and not come on again till october-november time.
All bills are calculated annually by the energyco's and divided over monthly repayments.
Once thing though, recently switched hot water over from gas to electricity in the form of a heat pump and before that, gas was ?1400/year (as it was running 365/24/7 to keep the tank hot) and electricity was ?600 - by paying ?1200 for the heat pump hot water tank (300 litres) which is 50% paid in tax credits by the state, we've saved ?500/year in energy costs - best frikken 'investment' I EVER made!
