We rely on the Japanese for all the great technology we have, they also have the best brands IMO. Not saying this is why people care lol, a big earthquake happens course it's gunna be talked about... And FYI when soldiers die it is mentioned on the news. I'm not 100% sure if every American soldier that's KIA is mentioned on American news channels but in the uk almost every soldier that dies is usually mentioned on the news here.
