No way. What they have to do is make joining more attractive than not joining. Offer something inside the site that can't be found for free, other than HD. Offer something that's different for the 100 or 1,000 other sites in their niche and style.

At the moment there are more reasons to not join a site than there are reasons to join a site. Proof is in the stats.
