Movies are just like music. If you find everything through the normal mainstream channels, then most stuff will seem like crap.

there's some really good movies out there if you just look harder. Film is better than its ever been.

if you want some newer good horror films which aren't stupid i would highly suggest-

Pontypool (canadian, one of the best horror films i've seen in a while)
The Horde (french zombie film, worth watching)
Los Sin Nombre (fucked up spanish creepiness)
Let Me In (remake of Let The Right One In, excellent)

And if you haven't seen REC and REC 2 you should.

All of these are intelligent, well written, uncontrived horror films. (the horde is the lesser of the bunch but times are slim for horror)

ive watched them all pontypool was hella slow that radio bullshit ive seen mostly anything that horror.

i tried to do this at one point myself.. but you can't do it... the characters break all the rules of every story ever written and they suffer because of it. I know not all good stories have happy endings but you need to create characters with both good and evil in them to be believable and to be good. The truth is there is no such thing as pure evil and every time a horror movie, or even just a bad movie in general tries to create this it fails. Shit, you even feel sorry for Godzilla at certain points!

I often use Silence of the Lambs as a perfect example. People always yell out: "that's not a horror movie!" I disagree. It has scenes of overly graphic violence and it is scary as shit... exactly what horror movies try to do.

The monster in the movie is absolutely likable, almost to the point where you want to be this character. Intelligent, stylish INTERESTING. It is rare to see that in any horror film. Sure Jason is cool to look at and the idea of Freddy Kruger is awesome, but what they do with them is lame and stupid. Completely unbalanced and the movies become childish and boring because of it. They rely on things jumping out at you every 5 minutes to keep up the scare factor. That has the equivalence of a stand up comedian jumping into the audience and start tickling people and saying he is funny...

They can do better but they don't bother. I think Caligari has done his homework though so I might take his word on his suggestions.
