Dual Intel Quadcore Xeon e5640's
32GB DDR3-1333 ECC RAM
8x80GB Intel 80GB SSD in Raid-10 (yielding a mind numbingly fast 320GB storage volume)
From there, you can implement memcached, or even use a chunk of the servers memory for a ramdisk. There are lots of good options on the software side.
A server like this will be a sickeningly fast, DB shredding machine.
I have a setup similar to this with Dual Quadcore 5640's, and have a hard time getting it to blink no matter how much I throw at it. 2 Thumbs up for the Dual Quadcore 5640's

My last server was bogging down with traffic and I looked at upgrading packages, then decided to just shell out the cash for to own the server and no longer lease.
I think the quad core + 32GB RAM though goes a long way to help to the speed, not the storage
The Raid-10 out of SSD's portion of what I said is the important part, as far as db serving is concerned. True, most of the 320GB will not be used. Duh.
Also, using the right sized stripe in that array is very important too - something most people forget.
