    Ubuntu ROCKS

My desktop at home is running Ubuntu and it's so much better then winblows.

I refuse to upgrade to Vista... every new version is just more of a memory and resource hog filled with errors.

There is no reason to switch to Vista. The OS doesn't have any features we need other then DX10, which doesn't matter until games support it. Hardware and software apps support is not great and the integrated drm sucks

Ubuntu is alright for people new to Linux but has become a rather bloated distro. I prefer FreeBSD w/ XFCE, (FreeBSD is NOT Linux), but if I had to choose a Linux for my desktop I would probably choose Zenwalk.

Sony, no - not natively, but many Windows programs can be run with a package called wine. Also, there are tons of open source programs available for every task imaginable - and they are often better than their Windows counterparts.

if microsoft had any brains in their head they would have kept xp going and just sold upgrades to it.
they are pissing people off with this discontinue support for xp.
now people are jumping ship for other operating systems.
if you visit the linux support forums you will see a lot of people who left windows just because of this screwing microsoft done to them.

yes. use an app called wine, that will let you run most windows apps.
also you can make your machine dual boot. that way the machine only boots so far and stops and asks you if you want windows or linux. grub is most commonly used for dual boot.

ubuntu is the aol of linux, but it's a nice operating system.

i use windows for photoshop, flash, visual basic, etc, so i don't run linux very often anymore.

www.vmware.com (free) lets you run windows inside of ubuntu, but it's awful if you have graphic design work to accomplish.

if you really want to jump on the ubuntu bandwagon, dual boot so you can use windows also.

unless you don't really need anything on windows, if that's the case, just wipe your drive and install.

                                          linux = faster/safer
but i'm accustom to winows software, so fuck it

also, if you're a linux newbie, you'll want automatix

                                            www.getautomatix.com

automatically downloads and installs any type of software you'll need

and you can emulate windows programs in linux with "WINE" - but they run pretty crappy, don't expect to emulate photoshop

I ran Linux as my main PC for a couple of years but that was a long time ago and there were things I couldn't do on it back then that I need to do on a daily basis.

I may buy one as a second PC but I also need a mac for testing.

                                              Thanks for the info people!

I have Dreamweaver and Photoshop running on Linux and they run well. No lagging, no bugs, no BS. They run clean and smooth, just like they did on XP.

I had a dual boot on my system, Windows/Ubuntu for quite awhile. Then one night I went to bed and my system was running fine. Woke up the next morning to a complete nightmare. Some virus slipped through the cracks and caused all kinds of hell. I couldn't even boot back into Windows. Lost all kinds of data. It was just hell. After that mess, I've been 100% Ubuntu.

Every program that I use on a daily basis, except one - (Advance Submitter), I have running on Linux. No way in hell am I ever switching my main machine back to Windows.

See this is why despite being FREE Linux will never become popular. People buy a computer and they expect thing to work. The average person is ignorant of computers anyways and face it Linux even in it's most dumbed down form is too complicated for them. No one is going to want to search for
open source" anything. Telling them Windows and all MS products suck anyways is not going to get them to switch. Once they make a Linux version that work with programs people already have and is as easy to use for most people then it might have a chance. You think since it's "open source" and they have tens of thousands of geeks working on this thing that they could have done this by now.

WINE is the killer app for Linux, it's quite buggy right now, but give it another year and it will rock.
If you're not comfortable with Ubuntu's interface, you can try Kubuntu which looks more like Windows.
The only thing that's stopping me right now from switching completely is WINE, but it's getting pretty good recently, I bet in a few months we will be able to run Photoshop CS2 out of the box. Just give it some time

I had it with XP SP2 last week. I had to format/update etc for 30 hours this week to make it work

I'm switching to Mac Os X this summer. I will be only using Windows when it's really necessary. The time to switch to another OS has come

I use Kubunto on my laptop's, wich is just the KDE version since im used to that interface. But still use XP on our workstations since there is only limited drivers avalible certified to the hardware we use. Im planning to give my mother a new PC with Ubunto on, because there is everything you need there, and i dont see why I should spend 125,- dollars on a XP/vista licens when all she ever does is check mail and browse
