Personally I think sigs basically have 0 value. Posting for the sake of "banner views" is worth very little.
That being said, there are some people on here that I have seen that have a talent for marketing and branding. That's worth its weight in gold, as is basically the equivalent of hiring an Ad/PR firm more than it is "buying a sig".

Spot on.
And to answer the question, my sig is extremely valuable.
Obviously they're worth something, just not as much as people pay for. I don't believe that buying a sig for $5K (which has happened at least a few times in the past) is actually a good investment.
My peak posting days were '97 to '02, so if my sig ever was worth $$$, it's well past its sell-by date. But in fact for more than 10 years I didn't use a promo sig or even add a referral code to a recommendation unless asked. Put that down to my own attitude to other peoples' sigs: I flatly will not click any link with a referral code unless the person flying it has made at least a token effort to "sell" whatever it is he or she is promoting.
I have made some exceptions for "good causes" and since I started working for other people, I use a link to my own site whenever I can handle some more work. I don't know if it has cost me any money, but I prefer people to be sure that if I recommend something, I don't have an ulterior motive.
In a few weeks that is going to change, because I have started working mainly for a particular sponsor and I shall be promoting his sites. But I wouldn't do that if he weren't among those I have been recommending freely in any case.
