I'd figured I'd do something up MY alley for this, since for once a client isn't calling the shots or setting the limits, but then I crawled into my content trove and lo and behold... it's all pretty mainstream, not really my 'thing' at all, lol... tons of blow jobs, tons of anal, tons of group (dp and a2m even), lots of ebony, lots of girl/girl, lots of tits, big and small, and facial cumshots galore... but I want goth, or heavy duty bdsm. Not even any fisting *sigh*

So:
Someone mentioned apples and oranges.. If different/own content and domains will be allowed, then flash should be allowed too, cause the final look&feel is what we're after.
And if we want a "real-life" situation, then all of us must work with the same sets of content (not one set, but the same "total" material), same 5-6 domains, and content zips should be uploaded on June 1st, and the tours should be flat, no flash.
I think this makes sense, if it's BS tell me that

The non-spoofy (if that's even a fucking word) gothic or 'dark' themed porn I've found is either too staged, like the pornstars in 'gothy' outfits you spoke of before, or campy, like those "gore" sites I've seen around once or twice... with martians, and vampire nuns and stuff. It's fun, I love it because it's different, but it's not GOTH like I want GOTH - I guess that takes either REAL goth chicks, or girls that have pale skin, dark hair, and who can fake the goth look without looking completely out of their element whilst also managing to be sexy and possibly be boned - apparently, not an easy find ;)

Hopefully inspiration will still strike, even without yummy gothy fun... but if anybody has some yummy gothy fun they'd want to sponsor in this contest, I'll take it Otherwise, it's pornstars or lesbians... or maybe oral... see, I can't even make a bloody decision! If anybody's having a *really* hard time scraping content together but really wants to do this, let me know, I may be able to help you out.

I strongly vote for "preset" niches AND content because it WILL be most interesting (at least from my point of view) to see what they made of it. It's also much easier to compare that way..
5 niches to choose from sounds good.

and the web voting is a bad idea IMHO. perhaps lensman is able to find some kind of "board add-on" for invisible voting results, and of course only those who registered before 15/5 will be allowed to vote..
this way "cheating" is probably still possible but it simple WOULDNT HURT as much as a "hitbot" for web voting because there are so many hundreds of board members who can and will vote... if some designer asks his buddies to vote for him to get the $3000 tv it does not really matter for the final result

I could see some people feeling their creativity 'stifled' by not being able to use their own judgement and taste in selecting photographic materials to build a tour with, despite the argument that in a 'real' situation with a 'real' client they'd theoretically be 'limited' to what the client had onhand.

However, I'd imagine most designers, like myself, take only clients with subject matter reasonably interesting to themselves; I wouldn't take a scat site, for example, because I wouldn't be able to create a site appealing to the end-user, because to me it's completely offputting. I also feel no qualms about asking the photographers and/or videographers I work for/with for specific material to use in the future for design, promo, whatever.

So, limiting the content wouldn't really establish 'reality' or a more level playing field; at least, I don't think so, and we've already sort of agreed that since this is a graphic design showdown, there's already a lack of 'realism' inherent because in the real world, it's not about how pretty it is, it's about how well it converts. Limiting the content seems even more unfair when you read through the thread and see how many people are actually willing to share content, even if for the contest only, which in itself levels the playing field by allowing everybody some sort of access to something they like, something that inspires them, and something that reflects their style and taste and creativity.

With the new trend in 'ultraniche' categories (balloons, anyone?) exactly who gets to choose WHICH five categories we finally settle on? I could see going with overly general categories, i.e. hardcore, fetish, gay, amateur, but then what becomes important enough to be number five? Lesbian could legitimately be pushed under gay; anal, oral, toys, cumshots, fucking, group all fall under hardcore; fetish covers anything from balloons to butts to piss; maybe the fifth category could be ethnic sites? If so, that might work, it'd still let everyone choose pretty much freely, if you'd consider blonde/brunette/redhead 'ethnic' just like ebony, interracial, asian, and latin...

Unless you broke it down like that, I don't know how you could fairly choose five strict 'categories' (what, no group interracial trannie insertion category?), and really, does the category of the site even matter (as long as it's LEGAL, of course!)? If we delineate the entries like that, it brings the apples/oranges argument back again.

Keeping it simple and open to interpretation is sort of the fun part, I think. Flash and plug-ins aside, this is an artistic free-for-all and on some level, I personally figure the less regulation of ideas and the creative process, the better results we're all going to have, the more fun it will turn out to be, and, I'd bet, in the end it'll turn out to be quite a profitable 'game' for many of us, in some form or another.

Ok that was long winded. Sorry. Just my thoughts... and apparently, there's WAY TOO MANY of them flitting around in there.

Though the chance is an outside one, it will be interesting to see which categories people gravitate toward, and how far some will bother going with it

Is there still 2 categories? Flash and Non-Flash, because it look like there is more and more designer welling to do the free tour in flash.

I think we decided that there would be a flash category, but only for show. Since there is only one grand prize, we're going with the original rules that said no flash for competition. There's a lot of thread here so I may have missed something, but that was last that I read on it.

I thought i would add my 2cents to this showdown you guys are having.

From other contests that i've see, (and i think a few people already pointed this out), the contestants are usually given one niche, and all the same content...choosen by the officials.

The officials should choose the niche, and the content. On a certain day, everyone in the contest can download the zip file to the contains the content...say, 20 different sets in the zip file.

No contestant knows the niche, or whats inside the zip file until that day.... this avoids pre planning.

Once they get the content, and the niche, then they design.

This makes the content totally even as eveyone uses the same content and niche.

A contest like thisis meant to show the creativity of each person, and how they use the content that were given. Thus, this IS what this contest is about from what iv'e read. I personally would love to see how 15 different designers choose to design with all the same content.

When your able to be given content from providers, and choose your own niche, it really makes no sense in my opinion. You guys have talked about having the voting without showing results because it's "sways" peoples judgement.

Well, what about different niche's? It does the same thing. If a contestant did a teen niche, and another one choose a mature niche, people are most likey going to "sway" towards there favorite niches...thus making the voting uneven.

A true contest is this:

On a certain day choosen by the officials, you go to webpage that is given out to each contestant. This is where the contestants find out the niche they will be designing, and download a zip file which contains the content that the officials choosen...(for that niche obviously).

A week later, the designs are do and people vote. If there's any ties, the official make the final vote, or hold a second contest for the people who tied.

I don't do flash, but there were some guys that were going to show off their designs. Like I said it is non competition, but last I read we're going to have a showcase for flash.

I'd love to see a flash showcase... I dabble a little, but not as much as I should, and some of the things you can do with it are great. It'd be wonderful to see sites run and designed completely in flash rather than just flash splash grahpics or non-interactive use of flash... nav, menus, sales pitches, dynamic copy, etc. - is that what calibur of work you guys are going to be doing?

I understand where you guys are coming from with the fixed sets/fixed niche thing..... but this is turning out to be pretty huge... do you really wanna look at 30 or 40+ versions of the same site?

Wouldn't it be much more interesting to see a wide array of differeent stuff? How does that make it unfair? If you're doing a tour that you personally got a groove for, I kinda think that would promote everyone's BEST work.... and isn't that what we really wanna see? Even if someone picks a bizarre niche.... if they're good at doing that niche, the tour should be smokin'.....

we DO have judges for this, and they're not going to base a final decision on one or another because they don't like "Gay" or something.... they're responsible enough to know that it's about the design of the tour and not their own personal sexual preferences. Have some faith here.....

Imposed sets would help by giving them to designers on launch date. Nobody gets ahead.

I think that plan is not gonna work.... for several reasons....

so I think whatever the designer does with the tour afterwards is gonna be dependant on each individual situation. Some may want to sell it, some may want to use it for their own, some may have it promised to a content provider or someone, some may want to auction it off..... so, from what I can see, there's really no ONE thing we could impose on that.....

Personally, I'm willing to hand mine over to a prize sponsor if it gets that far, and if not, auction it off. But that's just me..... what everyone else does with theirs is gonna hafta be up to them.

but that doesn't really matter...... it's only supposed to be a week.... and most.... (I say most....) designers can easily put out killer work in a week or less. So, if someone wants to get a head start, that's fine..... it doesn't matter. If it was only "you got 3 hours to come up with the best you can!" then it would matter.... but since it's a week.... time isn't really an influencing factor here, and it just doesn't matter. Plus.... someone might have an issue with that week and need to get it done beforehand in order to play.

Ya know, since this is the first contest of this kind here, perhaps it should stay nice and open.... allow everyone to pick their own content, niche, domain.

If something gets fucked up, second time 'round it can be changed. I doubt this will be the first *and* last contest of this kind here, agreed?

I think a lot of people see that there is quite a bit of competition, but keeping this fun and interesting I think setting restrictions would suck big donkey dick, and personally I would like to see everyone's serious skills and tastes in what they produce. This is not about who can make one certain set of content look the best, this is about who's got some serious skills and creativity to put together a badass tour. Like Amp said, like a CAR SHOW! Do you really want to see all these talented people use the same set of pictures to make a tour? That is so fucking boring, how is someone supposed to find their inspiration? yuck.

I want to see ART, not who can make the same pussy pics look the best.

I personally think auctioning the tours is an opportunity to do something good, and it also diffuses any bad feeling that might come out of this. Any kind of competition has the potential for that. And it also would make a good comparison between the voting and what actually sold. If a designer doesn't like the idea, they don't have to enter.

Maybe some do, but most take em home and show em to friends or in this case, Im gonna put my tour where it belongs, on its domain, as it should be, then we can talk about the "conversions" of these sites months from now, or have an Annual GFY Graphics Showdown and we can discuss the progress of the sites who won the previous year and how theyre conversions were throughout the year... if we wanted to.

When I first got wind of this, it sounded cool, geez it sounds like its becoming more pain than fun now. Stop with all the girly shit, you guys sound like a bunch of women throwing a Tupperware party who cant decide on a sandwich spread.

Quit worryin' bout what happens to the tour, mine's gonna be uploaded to its real domain and the member section will be built upon the end of this thing... get this thing back to "design" I'm anxious to do something NOT like the people ask for, for a change.

Working in the Art world over a decade now I can tell you every Art show I have curated artists always have pieces NOT FOR SALe, in this case, my tour will Not Be For Sale or Auction...

Sit back enjoy the show, make some contacts, like any other event, and let the pieces be hung on whoevers wall the artist chooses, in this case cologroup.
