    Domain seizures gone horribly wrong

    was anyones affected by this?

    http://www.thinq.co.uk/2011/2/16/us-...ld-porn-gaffe/

The Department of Justice and Homeland Security?s ICE office announced last week that it had shut down ten sites dealing in kiddie porn and and counterfeit goods but it turns out that the organisation had actually killed off 84,000 entirely innocent web sites by mistake.
The sites, which are mainly owned by small businesses and hosted by free FreeDNS, were all listed under the domain mooo.com, and were seized after a district court judge was convinced to issue a warrant. Each site was subsequently plastered with a rather scary notice saying "Advertisement, distribution, transportation, receipt, and possession of child pornography constitute federal crimes that carry penalties for first time offenders of up to 30 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, forfeiture and restitution."

So they shut down a DNS gateway?

This is 2011. Government agencies need to get hip with the Internet because they keep fucking things up with their old fogey administrators. Hell I would be happy to take a fed "technical advisor" consultant contract.

they for a short time shut down moooo.com which does dynamic third level hosting. the domain was locked, and so all the sites on third levels were dropped. rule #1 kids buy your own domains they are $10.

            Sucks for the innocents involved.

I don't know if they can do anything about it though.

I doubt the innocents knew about the offending sites, so they didn't have
the insight to host somewhere else.

I think some people don't buy domains because they don't understand the process
and probably think it is way more complicated than it is.

I talked to an IC3 agent, on the phone, a few years ago and he did not know how to find the host of a domain... ie.. whois lookup.
