They could always send cheques via registered mail, but that would probably end up costing more in the long run than replacing a relatively small percentage of lost cheques, and wouldn't be reliable (or available) for cross-border delivery.

60 days seems an excessive amount of time to wait, unless they're not sending the cheques via airmail. (Do standard letters even go via sea any more?)
