would you prefer they use children to defuse those mines?

i think they should have used sheep... no one likes sheep... or pandas...

but ya, that IS pretty crazy, i didn't think they'd be turning zebras and the likes loose in minefields. the whole idea is pretty crazy...

this is the middle of africa for fuck sakes, do you think everybody has a mine detector in their closet? people use what they have at their disposal to get rid of the mines. a bunch of wild animals. which in my opinion is alot better than just leaving them there to blow the shit out of their children, dismember friends and family, etc etc.

if you want to talk about sick, how about we look at who put those landmines there and why?

in the end, i don't see any of us hopping on the next flight to the middle of Zimbabwe (or whereever there's landmines) to disarm them ourselves. there's no landmines your backyard.

so smile and enjoy the fact that you just saw a gazelle get 25 feet of air, and thats one less landmine in the ground. only a few million or so more to go...

                        Good points!

Congrats to Canada for taking the initiative in banning the use of these weapons with the Ottawa Treaty 1997 (Mine Ban Treaty). A majority of countries (over 150) have now ratified the Treaty.

A few major players in the landmine business have not (or cannot) ratified the Ottawa Treaty - among them, China, Russia and the US - the latter being the largest exporter of arms.

Estimates of those killed remain vague, but in the region of 26,000 civilians each year with about 50% being women and children. Since 1975 until recently, the estimates of peacetime deaths from stepping on landmines is in excess of 1 million.

Approximately every 20 minutes an individual gets killed from mines left over from a conflict. In Vietnam alone, 40K'ish people have been killed and most of these were children playing in fields or farmers. Over 80% of amputations performed in ICRC hospitals are for land mine victims.

So... agree - it is sick .....

nah, they had 10 years of fighting in Mozambique and major problem with landmines after that, never heard of mines in Zimbwabwe, I used to live in SOuth Africa for 10 years and went to Mozambique once

and btw they use rats to sniff out the mines since the rats are too light to set them off so at least that method must be PETA approved ;)

What's even sicker is the landmines that are designed to look like children's toys, and are not intended to kill, but to maim and disfigure the children. After all, it is a much greater victory in killing a nations spirit to maim and disfigure their children so that they live our their days in visible pain and suffering rather than to merely KILL them.

No living creature deserves this kind of bullshit... child, animal, nobody.

You are not far off on Zimbabwe...

Zimbabwe has it's land mine problem tho they ratified the Ottawa Treaty around 1998 ish and targeted to spend around $40 mill by the end of 2009 in clearing land mines.

Most of the mines were planted by the then Rhodesian forces. but they have already made good progress tho still a hell of a lot to do. About 40,000 land mines have been removed from the northern borders and around the Victoria Falls area.

Obviously each year there are deaths which seem to be a mix of land mine removal people and children - around 30 - 60 deaths, which is probably fairly low in relation to the number of mines. Many more are injured from blasts and the costs of support/healthcare for them is considerable.

Sounds about right man. Also, depending if there is existing documentation/mapping on where the mines were planted, this can cause delays and further risk trying to locate them. Risky biz!
