This will shortly be follow by a designer thread complaining his latest client changed his mind and bailed out now that the design is done....
I don't know a designer who ISN'T chasing somebody around asking "where the fuck's my money bitch?" For real, I won't even start a job anymore unless you give me a couple damn good references, or put half up front.
Well Im the sales Rep for www.student-design.co.uk a local UK design company, and we wont even START a design project until the client has signed the contract.
Why?
So we're guarunteed payment
So the client is guarunteed the design
It's pretty simple, and it's the extra service you get by getting work through a design company and not just a single freelance designer
someone I dont know we ask for 50% deposit but have yet to not complete a job for anyone
Amen to that.
It's one thing if we know them.
I have been stiffed too many times over the years, doing design work and some of these lazy people run off with my work.
We need at least something, to show us in good faith.
next time you need design work, contact me and i will take care of you. We have many clients that would back us up that we are great to work with. Work is completed on time, binding contracts and KICKASS DESIGNS THAT CONVERT
We don't ask for a deposit upfront and have had very few issues with payments over the yrs at www.webinc.com
1. We send a quote
2. You get sched. in and access to our Client Section.
3. Works start on or before your sched. date
4. You approve / make changes to all design work
5. Design is done, you make final approval
6. You pay the bill..
We make it pretty easy at webinc.com
Thanks
Todd

a down payment on design work? NO WAY... then your both out more time when no one likes whats designed and then they don't want to give a refund... if your a good designer you know you are... and if your good you will bill someone for the work later on....
I always do 50% up front with new clients, especially on larger jobs. If someone isn't ok with that, they can find themselves another programmer.
You have to realize we need to protect ourselves too. If i quote someone $1500 on a coding job, I view the deposit as their commitment that I am the one doing the job. Otherwise what if I finish half the project, and they suddenly decide that they want to go with another guy who quotes less?
