"State and local governments this week resumed a push to lobby Congress for far-reaching changes on two different fronts: gaining the ability to impose sales taxes on Net shopping, and being able to levy new monthly taxes on DSL and other connections. One senator is even predicting taxes on e-mail."

"But with Democrats now in control of both chambers of Congress, the political dynamic appears to have shifted in favor of the pro-tax advocates and their allies on Capitol Hill. The NetChoice coalition, which counts as members eBay, Yahoo and the Electronic Retailing Association and opposes the sales tax plan, fears that the partisan shift will spell trouble."

Great..... Nothing like more taxes to screw with us all a little more. It doesn't sound like it has much for boundaries on who we tax, is it everyone, international too, per state? And more ISP taxes? Will paysites add the tax on or eat it from the net profits?

Does anyone in our gov think? About the negative impacts this will have with online sales, small businesses, and enforcement?

What are the nice, clean, safe, tax free or low tax countries again?

Lots of people won't have much worries with this tax law, I'm sure it will follow up with many instate tax laws in most states for Internet sales. I think many people run rather automated, from the processor, to nats, to payouts.. From adult to mainstream, this is one major technical shift that would have to be made.

"Enzi's bill, introduced this week, relies on the agreement when providing "federal authorization" to require out-of-state retailers "to collect and remit the sales and use taxes" due on the purchase. (Small businesses with less than $5 million in out-of-state sales are exempted.)"

What % of US based online companies move more than $5m in out-of-state (country?) business? $400k+ a month in online sales business, that' has to cut out a pretty damn big % of the people, may not be so hard business wise for these companies to comply, still sucks though.

Most retailers already charge local sales tax. For example if you buy something from wal-mart they'll charge you the sales tax of the area you have listed as your home address. And they've been doing that for years.

What do paysites have to do with ISP taxes? ISP taxes are no different that the taxes you pay for cable or phone service.

Don't worry Congress will extend the tax ban and if not if Mr Bushy hates taxes so much then he should veto it right?

Taxes imposed solely on the internet would be totally stupid.

I think that making people pay their local sales tax rate on purchases made online is only fair though. (On tangible goods that are shipped into the state)

Local merchants who pay local taxes shouldn't be at a disadvantage to an online retailer in another state.

No, I'm not acting like it's something new.. It could expire in Nov, and it's being pushed to not veto it, right?

This is a pretty big difference between walmart and pure online companies not setup to do this at all, that run pure automated software, that many don't control, setup years ago, are very small operation ran companies, or acually are fully virtual ran companies which have no product but do process transactions. It's a huge difference.

Want does this have to do with ISP tax? Think outside the box.. Millions of Americans already drop or don't have 'net services due to the price, this 'tax' will not help situations any, since they will pass the Tax to the user.

I hope it gets a nice big kick in the veto ass, but with all the recent bs that has went through, hell yeah my panties are in a knot.

We pay taxes in Canada on online shopping.
And it is only normal .... for fair competition.

I also charge taxes to my hardgoods and hosting clients, if they are located in Canada ...

wages going down taxes going up.... trying to make a welfare working class. Flood the US with undereducated and poor to drive the wages down, then tax the hell out of everyone and give the poorest money...hmmm

war in Iraq = $100 billion a year

Illegal Immigrants = over $250 billion a year

Which will bankrupt us first? We can leave Iraq and stop spending money there.
