    Cheers . . . . what does it mean?

I have clients from Oz and England and other places where "cheers" seems to have a different meaning than what I thought it meant. Kind of like how aloha means hello and good-bye.

What are the different meanings of cheers where you live (and where do you live)?

U must be a big hit in England then!

Isn't it commonly said in Oz as well?

Cheers can be used as a salutation or toast or to say thank you.

Sometimes gets used to sign off on emails, phone calls, etc too.

Because of the Internet it's caught on with alot of non-UK people who now end their emails with 'cheers' - i hate it personally.

In Japanese, the traditional salutation before drinking is Kampai (pronounced "comm-pie"). It means "empty your cup" - the characters for 'Kampai' literally mean 'dry' (kawaku) and 'drinking cup' (sakazuki).
