How many keywords to target when doing SEO

I was wondering if someone can answer a question for me. I am wanting to know, how many keywords is it possible to target for 1 site - 1 main page that is.

I am doing SEO for a webcam site, and have a start on some decent spots for about 10 keywords, but i am wondering how many keywords i could actually hit before google bitch slaps me down the list.

Could someone give me an example, or even just tell me in your own SEO work, how many keywords you have been able to hit for 1 page?

So not counting sub pages or gallerys or anything like this, how many keywords could you get for just 1 main page?

Im also talking about big keywords here too, im sure you could hit lots of smaller ones easy. Im talking about keywords you need hundreds of incoming links for.

One reason i ask, is i have noticed 2 spots suddenly disappear, and this is possibly at the same time as i put in links using a different keyword. Seems like my new keyword goes higher but my old one damn near disapeared.

Any info on this would be much appreciated

I usually target one main keyword and then more specific long term ones, including the first.

Like: main keyword - webmasters eat melons and then from 5 to.. 30 - webmasters eat green melons, webmasters eat melons pics etc
Banners, logos, headers, peels, FHGs, ads, paysites, photo retouching etc: my adult design portfolio

all versions of your main keyword

      main
      main key
      key main
      key key main
      main key key
      etc..

as long as your main is always in the term

        i dont agree., this

        what i learnt
small keyword are hard to rank.
long keyword are easy to rank.

pick 1 main keyword for ur site and 3-10 some long tail keyword.,

I think you can target as many different keywords as you want. However, consider your keyword density. If the keyword density is higher than something like 15%, Google could penalize you by giving you lower rankings.

Keyword Density = Keywords / Total words

Oh what i meant here by "big keywords" was keywords that alot of people are targeting - Say for webcam sites, this might be "Webcam girls" "Live sex" ect

I bet your right tho, shorter keywords would be harder to target - one more people would target them, but second their would be so many variations of that word.

I would focus on one or two then have about 3 or 4 backups.

Yea see problem is i am nearly #1 for 7 keywords - Then i got another 5 which im starting to come up for.

I would agree with you on just targeting a few - much better chance of hitting those. But well im a greedy bastard what can i say :P

I think in my meta tags ive got about 20 keywords listed.

So im a bit scared to pump in links for a new keyword, my others might drop like a stone.

Has anyone gotten 20+ keywords for 1 main page?
