One extra snag with the instant-upgrade plugin this time around, is that as the author states, it retains the original wp-config file. As a rule that is reasonable: it's what I do myself. However, this update has added a couple of extra lines to wp-config...
Whether it is vital to add them or only affects full functionality, I don't have a clue yet. Just be aware.
The good news is that I updated a test site which has near 50 plugins (basically everything clients ever ask to be installed): no glitches and so far everything seems to be working fine.Comment

Does widgets supported in the core mean that they'll show up in any themes or just those that have been widgetized? Or does it just mean that it's part of the package and not something just have to add to the install?Comment

I hear you, that is always one of my worries.
They do normally list the plugins that work, don't work & might work, but it isn't updated for the new version straight away.
One of the features of the 2.2 is that they will not allow you to activate plugins or edit a file that will break your blog. That's good but you really need to know before you upgrade..Comment

I'm not clear on the formal relationship between the different entities involved, but Matt Mullenweg (WordPress creator) is listed on the Automattic site (although not on KnowNow).
A couple of years ago there was some fairly mild criticism of Matt for some questionable SEO tactics he was apparently using on a site of his own, so he has had and may still have other irons in the fire.
If all else fails and the WP folk do ever look for a payday, WordPress wouldn't be the first freeware to be sold with a huge pricetag (eg ICQ $20-some million). Apart from WordPress itself (used by Yahoo, Harvard University, New York Times, Le Monde etc), wordpress.com reported 400,000 blogs a while back. I imagine the total is more now.Comment
