Honestly, depending on the state, if they are found to be unarmed, you can be held liable for the death. (Not Texas, of course).
However, the burden is in if a "reasonable person" would have feared that their life, or the life of their loved ones were in jeopardy, then it is self defense.
The short answer, "Bust a cap in his ass" very few people get convicted of shooting an unarmed burgler in their home.
If you don't have a clear shot at his front, (you can't shoot him in the back),
blow the back of his knee out, and you can probably get an unlawful discharge citation and probation if the law is not on your side.
If my family was in the house, "Law be damned", if you have enough balls to break into peoples houses, then you have enough balls to take a bullet in the ass. And as such should expect it one day.

I would try to lecture him on good and evil in society and how employment is always better than turning to crime. I have a two page outline of topics I would lecture him on and I wouldn't let him leave until my speech/lecture was finished and he had enough time to ask any questions he might have. I would also give him a copy of the outline to help him remember the subject matter because I do cover a lot in a two hour time period.Comment
