2 to the chest and one to the head is what they'll teach at basically any good self-defense course catering to CCW carriers, etc..
Of course, if you can hit center-mass 95 out of 100 times while shooting targets, there's no reason to fire those extra 2 rounds.
You're right to an extent, but if you go into it just planning to "show it" and they're carrying planning to "use it", you won't get a chance to have those dreams again. I always plan to show it, with thumb on safety and gun ready to fire.
