My bank actually stopped taking checks from outside the US. Because of Epass I hadn't needed to deposit a check from outside the US for a while. It used to be a 50 cent fee and a 5-10 day hold while it cleared. I went to deposit one a few weeks ago and they told me they don't take foreign checks anymore. Pretty crazy.

I'm pretty sure my bank gives me the money directly but they also tell me that they will take the money back from my account if the check bounces.

In theory it is much easier to just make wire transfer - no paperwork and no possible fraud.

Also i had recently very weird situation with one sponsor,i got check,put it to bank,and after 3 weeks i got mail how bank send them back check and how they want 50 euros to cash it out.So had to pick wire transfer instead so i paid 10$ for invalid check plus 20$ for wire transfer.

PS:
I saw some Russian-American company, registered company in both countries, specialized in cashing the checks.
They have license in US to do that job. Somehow I've lost the link but if someone has it please post.
