I got my wife the Kindle Last week for Xmas, but it's a gift and we have not used it yet, however my daughter-in-law is visiting and she has an Ipad and I gotta say it's pretty sweet (just for the extra features.... because when we travel we pack up like 3 notebooks, this would eliminate one of them for traveling). My daughter-in-law says she gets a few days of battery life which is nice.. (I know the kindle has long battery life too.. but for my daughter or wife using FB and shit in hindsight now it might have been better to go with the iPad).
But either way, there's a big price difference and if it's only going to be used for reading books, then the kindle is probably the best way to go...
Kindle for reading. You ever try to watch tv in the sun? yeah glare is a !@#!#@ on those ipads when you are outside. If you are inside it is a flat wash. If you do anything where sun/direct light is involved the ipad is hosed.
iPad works pretty good though - Kindle has many many more books
There is a kindle app for the ipad so you can read any book bought from amazon on the ipad. Amazon also have it so you can read on your mac and iphone too.
i have used both very heavilly. for me the ipad is a winner. i've used it in every lighting possible (as that seems to be peoples gripe) but i have never had an issue at all. The ipad does far more than ebooks which is its win. if all you want is something to read books that is sturdy, go with the kindle as it is a very good ereader, but if you could possibly conceive that you want to do more, like read a book and be able to tell the time, the ipad is your winner. there is a kindle app on teh ipad so you can switch anytime between a kindle and ipad if you change your mind later and you do not have to re-purchase anything.
another thing to point out is that to get other books on the kindle is a pain, like if you have a plain .epub you need to convert it to .mobi and then move it over usb ot the kindle. and you can forget the option of library ebooks and google books. but on an ipad you have all these options that you can use. you have the choice of many major stores to purchase your ebooks from (itunes, amazon, barnes & noble, google) plus all the other smaller ones

I have a kindle and love it. I got it to read on, not do anything else. I don't need another gadget that reminds me that I should be doing something productive when I want to just kick back, relax, and get lost in a story.

I actually use the Kindle app on my Droid and read wherever I want. I was worried that the text would be too small but it's fine ... I've read a book and a half in the two weeks I've had it.

I need to buy a present. Either the new Kindle or the Ipad 16GB Wi-Fi.
What do you guys suggest?
Ipad isn't an eInk device so it sucks by default (LCD burns your eyes out and doesn't allow you to read 100000 pages because of extensive battery usage). So my answer is SONY.
If it's just for reading the Kindle is great, especially if you read outdoors, no glare. I pad does the e-reader thing and so much more, and nothing says merry christmas like Angry Birds

The Sony is on the Sony site. Amazon wants you to buy their product, so they are not as into selling the Sony. That said, I dabble in selling ebooks (basically e-versions of books I've done) and everyone I know and everyone I deal with seems to like the Kindle the best for reading by far. Like no comparison. I like that the long pages on my tours look bitchin' on an iPad because it is shaped more like a magazine page, but the Kindle is much easier on the eyes for reading long text documents.
iPad is an absolute leader in the best E photo frame nomination. But it never been an E reader. All E readers use eInk technology, but iPad is just a regular LCD device like iPod but bigger.
very happy with the iPad and you have iBooks, Kindle for iPad, Stanza, Google books so you have the variety of readers. iBooks and Kindle are really good on the iPad. Stanza and Google you can get a ton of free classics.
