i have used both very heavilly. for me the ipad is a winner. i've used it in every lighting possible (as that seems to be peoples gripe) but i have never had an issue at all. The ipad does far more than ebooks which is its win. if all you want is something to read books that is sturdy, go with the kindle as it is a very good ereader, but if you could possibly conceive that you want to do more, like read a book and be able to tell the time, the ipad is your winner. there is a kindle app on teh ipad so you can switch anytime between a kindle and ipad if you change your mind later and you do not have to re-purchase anything.

another thing to point out is that to get other books on the kindle is a pain, like if you have a plain .epub you need to convert it to .mobi and then move it over usb ot the kindle. and you can forget the option of library ebooks and google books. but on an ipad you have all these options that you can use. you have the choice of many major stores to purchase your ebooks from (itunes, amazon, barnes & noble, google) plus all the other smaller ones
