    What are you Reading?

I know there have been a few of these threads this year already...but I'm wondering what you guys and girls are reading these days.

At the moment I am reading Battle Royale which is kind of like a modern take on Lord of the Flies.

Kagan's "Western Heritage," "From Dawn to Decadence," Leibniz's "Discourse on Metaphysics," Descartes' "Meditations on First Philosophy," Hume's "A Treatise of Human Nature," Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason," and Locke's "An Essay Concerning Human Understanding."

Decent Books, but I'm looking forward to this semester being done. :-)

So I take it you're studying Philosophy? I took a short course and remember reading a book called Sophie's World (I cant quite recall the author). I thought it was a very comprehensive guide to all of the great philosophers for anyone at a beginners level

That is some dense reading dude. I like reading philosophy now but was turned off it a bit when I was in school because they make you read way too much of it. Not to mention that philosophers are probably some of the worst writers around (in my opinion at least). But I like reading it now because they do have some interesting ideas. I generally like Locke and Hume for the most part, John Stuart Mill is another that is at least digestable.

lol. My phone bill is usually depressing to look at too.

I am pretty sure that the movie is based on the book. From what I understand they tried to stop it from coming to NA because of the theme, but it ultimately came here and didn't do all that well. So far the book has been an interesting read.

Yep... Philosophy and Western History are the heavy-reading courses this semester. Sophie's World (Gaarder was the author) remains one of my favorite books - read it (by choice - I had just finished an Intro to Philosophy class) for my first English Comp course.

Not to mention the book that defined the genre! Gibson was a genius. I'm looking forward to rereading that at some point (hopefully soon) myself.

My main course of study is in regards to mathematics, so I'm mostly interested in the way that the great mathematician/philosophers (and there were a lot of them) think. For example, Descartes may be a bit more boring than Locke... but the way that he attempts to "prove" his philosophy using mathematical logic is something I find intriguing.

It's all good reading, though... I can totally agree with you in that I wish they'd allow us more time to absorb it... the fact that they don't is why I find myself reading bits of so many books. I've often thought that if I was doing this at my own pace instead of having to cram it all inside 16 weeks, it'd be a much better experience.

myself I just finished reading The Borderkind by Christopher Golden, good read, second in a series. I also picked up a few editions of Fables (comic book graphic novel versions) and damn those are great, the writer has won Eisner awards for that series, it's definitely worth the read.

Besides that I've got to go pick up my copy of Countdown (DC Comics), now that 52 is over it's time for things to get REALLY serious over in the DC Universe (or Multiverse again now I guess - though over 3m deaths in 52 was pretty serious.. man, Black Adam sure lost his head!)
