There is at least 1 year warranty on most products, including PS3... so in that case you would get it repaired for free.. if it breaks after 1 year, you are kinda shit out of luck, but by then the product is probably worth fuck all anyway, so might as well buy a newer version...
but I guess you are probably not in the US, so you may not have these options... so for you it probably is indeed worthwhile to fix stuff yourself, but generally no one in the US bothers to fix stuff and it's not because of laziness... it's just not worth the drama...
