True story - I was on a flight to DTW one day sitting next to a group of three older ladies going to a library-related convention at the Ren center, and one of them mentioned she'd like to walk down to the library. *Everyone* within ten aisles of them simultaneously turned around and frowned at her - took her friends a minute to break the silence and point out that wasn't such a great idea. Good times.
Honestly though, as long as you're going somewhere you'd generally be welcome at you should be fine. Just like any other city with real crime. You've got about thirty seconds to turn around when everyone on the block starts giving you that "what the hell are YOU doing here" look.
