Anyone ever built their own computer?

I'm having some issues. I just built my own pc and I have a ASUS motherboard (http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1...44&modelmenu=1)
and I just bought Bose speakers and there is no sound that came out. Just to make sure we plugged in headphones and still no sound. We updated the bios, got the latest drives for the onboard audio card, checked all settings to make sure nothing was muted, and set the on board audio in bios to auto. And still...nothing. Has anyone had this happened to them and how did you fix it. Thanks!

The asus onboard sound can be a bit tricky. There is more than likely software that you needed to install of the mobo install cd. Go in your control panel and if its installed already it wil be named Sound Effect Manager Ac97 audio control panel. And make sure under Sound and Audio devices you have (what should be) Realtec Ac97 audio selected as your sound playback device under the audio tab. Good luck.

                that's easy to fix:

                clap your hands
                do you hear sound?
                No? Then you're fucking deaf

I doubt its a bad board(although it could be). Ive built 30 or so pc's and its usually just a driver or setting issue.

Goto control panel (switch to classic view on left), then goto sounds and audio devices. On the volume tab be sure it has your audio device listed. If you have one listed, its more than likely a software issue.

Try clicking on the Audio tab then Volume tab for sound playback. You may also need to choose your speaker type setup under advanced.

I've built every computer that I've owned except for the first one. What I want to know is why would you want to use the on-board sound? It's all good if it's for temporary use, but for use strictly as the main sound device it's crap. You can get a good sound card for cheap which will smoke any on-board sound. My current PC has and Asus board and the only time I used the on-board sound was when I was waiting for the sound card I bought to get delivered. There was a huge difference in sound with the on-board shit and the real sound card that I put in. (Turtle Beach Montego DDL - with optical out)

true, but seeing as in this case it's a "gaming edition" board on-board sound just won't cut it. Obviously if, in this case, IF the owner of this system wanted something simple they would not have opted for this board. Dual X16 SLI etc.. They'd all be useless features and a waste of money. It's kind of like buying a high end home theater receiver, but only to look cool and for the speaker you get the shittiest possible yet still assume you will get high quality sound.

Are the speakers plugged into the right jack? Sounds dumb, but I've seen plenty of people try to change everything when the real problem was they were plugged into the mic jack instead of the output.

with the on-board sounds that's on Asus motherboards you can plug the speakers in any of the available outputs.

Not much more you can, if you updated the / flashes the bios and downloaded the latest driver from the mobo's website then it has to be broken.

Onboard sound is just fine. There's not really a reason to get a sound card unless you 1) want something onboard doesn't have or 2) are heavy into gaming
