I think it's a little over 1 cent off a 28 year high. For everyone earning USD, it's trading at 1.1055 right now. Not good for people earning US dollars as their income, this sucks.

the US dollar is doomed.... it will only get worse this summer and into fall when the Fed is forced to lower rates to fight off a possible housing market led recession...
not good, ecspecially for us ex-patriots living abroad and still earning our income in dollars...

Even with similar levels of income from 5 years ago, I am looking at about a 40-50% cut in income in Canadian dollars. The only thing that keeps this from being a total screwjob is that domains and hosting are in US dollars as well.
The profit levels are way down (net Canadian) as a result.Comment

You know what's just awesome to watch? GFY economists. Seriously you guys rock. As the Canadian currency gets stronger, the Canadian's whine louder. Never mind the fact that purchasing power is increasing with the strength of their dollar, just skip right to the point and complain that while the currency you're paid in is STILL worth more than your own, it's worth less now than it has been in the past. Would you prefer US programs pay you $35CAD a sale? Pure genius, the lot of you..Comment

As another Canadian who has seen his income drop due to the USD-CAN exchange rate go from $1.55+ down to what it is now, it really is hard to overlook the fact that under Clinton the US deficit was reduced to nil and their dollar value was on the rise and in the $1.45 - $1.55+ range. Then under Bush the US deficit has swollen back up to unprecedented proportions and their dollar is in the toilet.
Simplistic view, yes... but someone has to accept the blame.
I'm definitely hoping the next US president will be able to at least to some degree remedy this situation, and bring the US dollar's value back to life.Promote Wildmatch, ImLive, Sexier.com, and more!!

How about the Canadians in my hometown, the one with a 70% unemployment rate because their largest industry shut down due to the horrible exchange rate because it was no longer economically viable to operate in Canada? I am Canadian. Instead of bitching about it, I realized that maybe, just MAYBE the USA isn't entirely to blame for the things I didn't like about Canada. Let's say I rent a condo, and pay $1000 a month canadian for it. Today, that would be about $900 US.
5 years ago, that would have been $610US - so we are now paying 50% more for the same thing.

You're still getting paid in the strong(er) currency. $1US is still worth more than $1CAD. So in fact, MOST Canadian's are getting paid in the weaker currency. The stronger their currency gets, the better it is for them, in general.
SO basically what you're hoping for is devaluation of your own currency for your selfish needs. Fuck every other Canadian, friends and family included, damnit I want 40% more for me! Fuck clawing back wasted money from welfare moms and Indians, devalue the currency god damnit!

All that rant would be very nice, if the prices in Canada would have dropped accordingly ... Funny, when I go to the car dealer, I don't seem to notice a drop of 40% in the prices of cars .... Gas is a good example actually. Why do you think gas is so much more expensive in Canada than in the US? Canadian taxes or the US's fault?.Comment

Where the hell do I blame the US for the prices.... I blame the price gouger and big corporation in CANADA that pocket the exchange... as the SAQ ( Liquor Board of Quebec ) that didn't re-ajust lower the prices of California wines...
The point of the thread, before you came in with your genious quotes ( 1000 dollars can five years ago is the same as 1000 dollars can today ... ), is that if you use to do 60K profit in US Currency, you had netted 90K Can.
Today, it is 66K Can, a loss of 24K .....

You cannot be serious? $1 is not still $1. When I started in 2001 I made $X to pay my bills and live here in Canada. Because of the rate I make less to pay my bills and live here in Canada. I pay my bills here in Canada so whatever I made CONVERTED to Canadian is my income I pay bills with and report to Revenue Canada. Due to the dollar it has dropped if you are making the same now as 2-5 years ago. Income is money earned in US$ converted to Canadian as far the gov't is concerned.$1000 a month Canadian for it today is the same as $1000 a month Canadian for it 5 years ago. Well, excluding inflation naturally.

Now thankfully I make a lot more than I did in 2001 but a guy can dream about what it could be can't he?
Your theory on other Canadians in not entirely true. There are some issues yes but things like tourism hurt as less Americans find it attractive to travel here. We have high gas prices, taxes on purchases, ect so with a low exchange rate it is not viable to come here. And most Canadians never leave the country. And since the dollar has gotten stronger name something that has gone down in price to benefit the "regular" Canadians.Fcuk Cash - Backroom Casting Couch, ExCoGi, BlackAmbush

Americans who get all bitchy at Canadians for this, wtf? Lest you forget that most of our products come from the USA.. So when your dollar was high, our prices went through the roof.. THen when your dollar crashed, our prices STAYED THE SAME. Nobody is going to take that profit off the table, especially when people are used to paying it.
When I was at the phoenix forum I bought a bunch of stuff from Izod for golfing this summer.. I got like 7 nice shirts, 2 pairs of shorts for myself, and a skirt, 2 shirts and some shorts for my wife.. For $230!
I could have bought like 4 shirts here for $230, maybe.Comment

outside of salaries - much of our product sold to the usa from metal to lumber relies on the american dollar being stronger. if not, then american companies then start buying their goods in america or other countries to save the buck that they need.Comment

Sure Lars - but there is also other areas outside the US where the market potential is much higher (and not just because of trends in the US home market or dollar exchange). Some of these regions are ranked in the top five in the world for real estate and will prob continue for a good few years yet at the current appreciation levels.XXX TLD's - Another mosquito to swat.Comment

lol so you guys are pissed off you aren't getting "extra" for every US dollar. Here is a news flash, if you lived in the US 60k would be 60k.. Mmmm... it's not just the Canadian dollar which is appreciating...
Just noticed the Euro is up again against the dollar from a week or so ago ... 1.31 to 1.36.
It's prob very safe to say by the year end there will be a further 5% "natural increase" of major currencies against the dollar - but prob more in a few instances.XXX TLD's - Another mosquito to swat.Comment

And look at all the graphs, when compared the the Euro, the Can$ follows the US$ like if they were holding hands... In other words, if the US$ fall (against the Euro) the Can$ will follow...
