It amazes me that people in this long ass thread didn't know that you can point your nameserves to a new host and it's basically on the fly now. Your ISP might pull the old shit, so drop your IP and unplug your modem. This has been standard for years. :/

Thanx for the sympathy, I will take you up on that offer, have no problem taking pity traffic
Yeah, tell Dino & Lil' Pete to hold off for now.
yeah, too bad surfers don't know how to or are willing to yank cords out of their modems and stuff or how to take time to change their host file..
I've done this in the past and you end up with a clusterfuck of old DNS/NS pulling up in the middle of a surfers session really is worthless unless you are just hitting a static landing page, and the static landing page makes sense until you get restored and have to deal with the DNS going nutty on the surfers for 2 days and them not being able to login, can't get to the join page etc.. so it ends up prolonging your down time.

The hand full of times I have met Brad I can say he would help out, his word is word is worth what he says...he really is a good guy. But kicking ass from boxing for 9 months..not sure about that. lololol sorry Brad.Hey, quote this, its rare for me!
Fuck you, asshole. I dare you to say that to my face as I have been boxing for nine months.
While you may have no character or respect for others, that doesn't give you the right to judge mine. PR stunts are for pussies with time on their hands. I leave more business in my inbox due to time constraints than most competitors have altogether.
That said, while I myself would never expect a similar offer if I was in that situation, I can imagine their horror and sympathize enough with the problem and its implications where yes, I would drop things to help.
I might not be the richest guy in the room but I work hard, sleep well at night.. and have tremendous karma from a lot of good deeds.

P.S. - I advised an RCN customer earlier to wait it out rather than me whore it out - by their own admission, stellar service for years already. If I knew the owner, I would have called already to ask in person and off the boards.Comment

They provide managed servers, hence they need access for their admins on all managed boxes hence they need to have centralized auth - as somebody explained earlier most likely with auth key. So to get access it's only matter of getting that key...dlXer - web design, developing, managed hosting, website optimizationsComment

your right, the hosting was not cheap. i wonder how many people leave after this?Comment

i think it would be important to base that decision on the exact cause and therefore which actions will be taken to prevent this from happening ever again. I am sure that RCN will do everything in its power to get to the bottom of this once all customers are back online againComment

Look.
Fact is they are responsible for the safety their network and in my opinion they are 100% responsible for all the damage caused.
I realy feel for them, but business is bussines.
Fact is all together people lost a shitload money already in the past days.
And it still continuous.
Who's going to compensate that "HUGE" loss of income? I'm curious.

If customers of RCN are back online i think it would be wise to wait for further announcements, moving to a new host right away does not solve anything at that point since your sites are back online again. I am pretty sure that RCN will do everything in it's power to prevent this from happening again solely based on the fact this is bad for business. I know down time sucks but it can happen to every hosting provider (roque ex-employee, failure in the power infrastructure etc etc).
A lot of ISPs suffered from circumstances outside their control: I know Alphared once suffered from a flooded electrical room, Isprime suffered from a large DDOS attack on their DNS nameservers. We, are no expection to the rule, once suffered back in 2004 when a datacenter employee received the news that his contract was not being renewed and decided to switch off a few racks to be fired and receive his government benefit instead of being unemployed. I am just saying, shit happens unfortunately...
You should be able to check this in your agreement with RCN, almost every ISP works with a SLA which covers normal situations of when your service is not working. The question however will be if this is a force majeure (something that happened outside of their control for which they can not be held responsible). If that is the case any financial credit issued by RCN will be gesture of goodwill. Of course RCN will try to identify the cause and will try to held that party responsible for their actions, honestly I don't think they will be able to recover any money that way as that will be a long legal way as well as the fact that that party is probably not in the possession of the requested sum of money.Look.

it was not an ex employee, that is just the best excuse they could come up with while trying to save face. If they really knew who it was then give me the logs and his name and I will start a class action suit against him. I can also mostl likely get him arrested. But i am willing to bet RCN will not provide this information cause the real reason is they fucked up and had some vulnerabilities and now they are paying the price for some crazy worm.
I got really shafted here, first epass, then netcash's stats, then RCN. How many times am I going to get bent over this month? You need triple redundancy in this business.no sigComment

no shit, just as I was giddy over getting my epass wire out the last day dodging that bullet, this happens.

^ amazing bradWhat a nightmare scenario, I wish them and clients luck and perseverance through this situation. That said, if more hands on deck would be helpful I will put myself and a couple techs in a plane to come out and help in any way we can. Fuck. I'll bring redbull. Call me on my cell if we can do anything to help, seriously. Everyone that's a client- sit tight, pray, be patient - go drink heavily - RCN is surely working it systematically and phone/email/icq requests don't help them get this done any quicker.

Seems like this getting back on track to rcn is getting slower and slower and so is the information level to their clients. At least yesterday was some notice from them. Today nothing! And any site came back online except for a single one? Anyone got news?Comment

i hope this will be a lesson to all host companies out there. because i dont understand how the fuck this happened to a company that was suposed to be one of the most reliable. i am still shocked here and wonder what to do next. i mean, how the fuck you dont change all the passwords when an employee leaves the boat. how? can anyone explain this?

New update: HOLY SHIT!
What does that mean? After evaluating the situation we've determined that given the level of damage that was sustained to both customer servers and infrastructure machines, the best course of action available is to enlist the resources of ISPrime to help bring customers back online as quickly as possible on their infrastructure. They've been volunteering their time assisting in the recovery process since the incident occurred.
The backup restore process, while successful, was taking too long given the number of affected hosts and would take too long for all of our customers. As a result the only way to get customers online and access to their data as quickly as possible was to shift them over to ISPrime given their larger size and their infrastructure.
Our staff is staying on board for the transition and we will be working directly with them to ensure that customers are able to be turned up. We ask that customers contact ISPrime directly to work out a new hosting agreement, they will be doing their best to match your current invoice pricing.
With the additional manpower on staff and with a stable infrastructure in place the restore process will now be progressing much more rapidly. We will be coordinating and working directly with ISPrime to make sure customers are setup and able to get back online as quickly as possible.
Our backup systems were unaffected by the intrusion and our policy was to backup every customer. While there may be a few limited exceptions we will be working tirelessly to ensure everyone gets access to their backups.
For the customers that were unaffected by the intrusion, Reality Check Network, prior to this incident was and still is a viable entity and as a result we will not be terminating any service in the immediate future. If you choose to migrate to ISPrime we will of course facilitate that process as well. Because we lease datacenter space from ISPrime for one facility in the US and one in Amsterdam, some customers may not require large changes or IP changes. Please get in contact with ISPrime directly so that they can help coordinate the matter for you.
We are still fielding calls and ICQs to the best of our ability, obviously the volume is high. But we are still remaining a point of contact for customers during the migration process to ensure they are setup and operational.

I've asked them 10 times over the last 48 hours since I purchased a new server to copy our database over, they sometimes say they are on it, most of the time I get ignored, nothing has been copied. It is not a big db yet its critical, all I need is 2 minutes of their time to copy my fucking database over and i'm in business again, yet I keep getting ignored. For TWO DAYS NOW. FUCKS SAKE. TWO FUCKING MINUTES RCN.Comment
