Did you know XP's Genuine Advantage Tool regularly phones home to Microsoft?

I came across this by accident because a couple of progs that normally start on boot (such as ICQ) hung for some reason, and a dialog popped up saying that the Genuine Advantage Tool wasn't responding. Hmmm. Why would GAT be running at boot?

Did a quick web search and what do you know... it runs because it's trying to phone home. Daily.

I bet that's one thing that the SP2 firewall doesn't block!!!

I ran a packet sniffer and didn't see anything happen on bootup. Are you sure you don't mean you had a service startup issue?

He's worried that MS will find out he's using an illegal copy of XP.

Actually, I own a fully legal copy, which is why I'm pissed off.
