alt is just text for spiders, so it depends on what you wrote on your site related to your backlinks, what it is in fact, etc.

Alt tags are very good if you use them wisely. If you choose to use the same words in your alt tags for every pic on your website you have a pretty big pla of getting f*cked by google. So use them but think about what you ut in an Alt tag

Alt tags are meant to provide alternative text display for either browsers that cant display the images or the blind.

As it is part of your HTML document the spiders will read them.
So it is wise to do what google likes most: put in a descriptive, human understandable tag for each picture. Of course use keyword phrases, but in such a manner that if a human were reading it things make sense..

Ie. This is a picture of a hot erotic super model porn star with her tits and pussy fully covered.... is absolutely human readable, original and full of keywords in such a manner though that google wont penalize you, but will pick up on them..
