If we'd had gun control in 1776...

We'd still be part of the British empire getting "taxation without representation".

That radical George Washington and his band of gun welding civilians, shame on them. </sarcasm>

So how would G.W. get guns to start a revolution if the gov(Brits) controled all the guns?

You do realize that times change right? That its not 1776 and we're not trying to free ourselves from British rule?

Only in the US would a tragedy like this happen and instead of it prompting real gun control debate, idiots pop up with the "obvious" solution of MORE GUNS.

"If only all the students at Virginia Tech were packing..."

          What a joke.

If US citizens didn't have guns Bush would declare a state of emergency and cancel presidential elections to form his own private kingdom until he won his war on terror.

It wasn't a solution, it was an observation. The point being is that when you find yourself in a situation where some psycho idiot is shooting at you and trying to kill you it in fact would be nice to have a gun on you so you can defend yourself and maybe save a few lives besides. That was the point, the ONLY point of that thread.

Nowhere did I suggest it was a solution, so while you're passing out clues maybe grab one for yourself.

As for gun control, I'm all for it in certain aspects, all of which I have posted several times previous to this.

                  Thank you.

I just posted something very similar in another thread, but it really applies here, too, so, pardon me repeating myself:

In the U.S., guns aren't only a tool designed to kill people, they're also a symbol of the citizen's power over his own government.

Part of the spirit behind the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in the eyes of the founding fathers was to enable physical control of the country's citizen militia forces over the Federal government itself. Handguns might not have existed back then, but neither did ICBM's.

As Thomas Jefferson first said in our Declaration of Independence from Britain:

"WHEN, in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands, which have connected them with another, and to assume, among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's GOD entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the Causes which impel them to the Separation."

or, as he put more succinctly in a letter to James Madison:

"...a little rebellion now and then is a good thing..."

What's often unrealized by a lot of anti-gun peeps in the U.S. is that the Second Amendment was established to, essentially, ensure that the people retained the power to overthrow their government in the future.

While the American system, ideally, enables the citizenry to do so without the need for violence (for each new presidency/congress is, essentially, a peaceful overthrow of the previous government), the importance of the Second Amendment is still present as an enduring freedom to that end.

Don't blame the tools - blame the idiots using them.

Unless you own halliburton you have no representation in this country anymore. This country was bought and sold long ago to special interest groups and big business.
In November, you can vote for America's next president or its first dictator.

The only reason the US even won the war was because the british had the most retarded way of fighting, just standing in rows and shooting, meanwhile you had indians in trees killing people.

It was a totally different world back then, you had to hunt for your food or starve. You couldn't just call the police when you had a problem, ect. Not that i am for gun control but the comparison is silly.

You are 100% correct, and THAT is why we need to fight for our gun freedoms. In the state the US is in right now, no, we don't need every civilian armed to protect the country. However you don't know what the world of the future is going to be like.

Fact: American citizens have the firepower to take on any army in the world.

                                        1. I never read your post. I was responding to Paul Revere. So, slow down big fella.

                                        2. Regarding your "observation". Yes I guess it would be nice to have a gun if a crazed psychotic Korean went postal on a campus I was on. It would also be nice to have a parachute if I found myself free falling from 5,000 feet. Doesnt mean I'm going to strap one on my back everywhere I go.

And yes I suppose it would be reassuring to me to have a gun in my possession. However that feeling would be wiped out by the 10 times more terrifying realization that every other 18-22 year old on campus is packing heat.

On a side note: Isnt it funny how the exact people that fight so hard for the right to carry a gun around are the exact people nobody wants carrying a gun. Just an observation.

Fact: American citizens have the firepower to take on any army in the world.

Why stop there? Im sure we could equip ourselves with missile launchers, hand grenades etc. I mean we got freedoms to protect. That bitch at McDonalds isnt going to fuck up my order again, thats fo sho.

If guns are banned in America, it will be just like drugs, any average person will still be able to get them

A new study suggests the use of handguns in crime rose by 40% in the two years after the weapons were banned.

The research, commissioned by the Countryside Alliance's Campaign for Shooting, has concluded that existing laws are targeting legitimate users of firearms rather than criminals.

The ban on ownership of handguns was introduced in 1997 as a result of the Dunblane massacre, when Thomas Hamilton opened fire at a primary school leaving 16 children and their teacher dead.

Existing gun laws do not lead to crime reduction and a safer place

                                                              David Bredin
                                                              Campaign for Shooting

But the report suggests that despite the restrictions on ownership the use of handguns in crime is rising.

The Centre for Defence Studies at Kings College in London, which carried out the research, said the number of crimes in which a handgun was reported increased from 2,648 in 1997/98 to 3,685 in 1999/2000.

It also said there was no link between high levels of gun crime and areas where there were still high levels of lawful gun possession.

Of the 20 police areas with the lowest number of legally held firearms, 10 had an above average level of gun crime.

And of the 20 police areas with the highest levels of legally held guns only two had armed crime levels above the average.
Way to go! Ban the guns so honest law abiding citizens are defenseless! Only criminals in the UK are allowed guns.

                                                                Maybe ban flamable liquids too.
