    some ways to stop pirates

    1. rather simple but easy. just put at the bottom of your website pages that members must not share passwords or content. that if they do then its a fine of $1000 or somthing.

I suspect a lot who re-post content think if they are members then they can do this. tell them not to and it should put a lot off.

    2. offer a reward. offer a reward to anyone reporting pirated content. let others do the work to find your content rather than spend all day doing it or even paying others to do it.

    3. club together. set up a newsletter for other webmasters. if you find pirated sites, inforn other webmasters. make it so a pirate site cannot last on the net.

    4. change your rules. mqake it part of your rules that affiliates are not alowed to run sites containing pirated content. many illigall tube sites makes money from such as dating sites. most of those dating site owners are on this site. so if you find sites making cash from dating sites - report them. and if they keep paying then we should expose them on such as this forum, and refuse to promote them.

Actually, more than 90% (probably very close to 100%) of the reposts come from those using stolen/hacked passwords. At least for our program that is so - legit members are highly unlikely to go to pornbb or empornium and post a full site rip there.

Thus improving your server's security is in fact a direct content protection measure.

As to the rest of your suggestions, I fully support them.

A lot of guys think that way, yes. This is good advice.

This is a good idea, but would get quite costly.
What if 100 people report the same site? I assume you would only pay one finders fee for the first person.
That will discourage other people to report sites.

Yes, this is the sad truth.
Most shared content and passwords come from hacking actions.

I think that at the very least there should be a load of text linked to in the footer explaining this content is subject to copyright restrictions and it is illegal to distribute it, copy it etc etc.

You know like you see on all DVDs and CDs.

All I see is for example:
                    | COPYRIGHT ? 2010 LIGHTSPEED MEDIA | ALL RIGHTS RESERVED |

And I ask myself, what is copyrighted? The web page? That doesn't state that the mdeia is copyrighted or it's illegal to upload one of the movies to a bt site...

In fact, it should be expressely written whether it's legal as a member to make a copy of the movies/sites (if available as site downloads) onto permanent media like HDs or DVDs... Or whether you can show it to other people at eg a party at your house.

It should be an absolute minimum imo to state the limitations of media use.

By the way a reward could simply be a month or so on your site.

Or you could have the reward given if it leads to a conviction. Ie, if you manage to sue a site, then you could give 10% as a reward.

I agree, but i would sugest more friedly than that. If i read that it would mean nothing except legal waffel.

But if you have somthing simple as 'you may download to your pc but not share the content or repost' i think thats simpler to understand.

i think some people even think they are helping by re-posting.

the problem is they see one person do it so presume its ok to do so.

its a bit like litter, if there is some on the floor, others just throw rubbish away too.

I don't see how what I suggested is waffle - write it however you want, but if you don't write it (and have the text linked to) then you really don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to court and the defence says "But, your Honour, there was nowhere on the site that stated the content that my client uploaded to the torrent site was protected by law against redistribution."

                              Waffle or not.

If you are going to completely take that route, why not make sure that it is understood that it is completely ILLEGAL to make a DVD or permanent copy of said content. Make sure that it is absolutely clear that said content not be shown in a venue other than for the sole buyer's personal entertainment and any other usage of said content only be used under expressed written consent? All violations hereforth will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law? FBI Piracy warning? Like on a DVD? Maybe?

i think you can have both. have the legal to cover your back.

but also have plain english to make it easy to understand.

at the end of the day its easer to put people off than to go to court.

its also nice for the member to be told in a friendly way. if i joined a site and all i could read was legall stuff it would put me off the site. but if it was in a nice way it would warm me to the site, plus i would feel if i spotted pirated content i would report it.

one thought could be, somthing we could all use.

i was thinking that when somone enters your site you have to watch a pop up flash film that says that. like on a dvd your forced to watch that at the start each time.

then once you have seen it you click to say you agree or not. if not the site shuts down. but if you agree it goes to the content.

which was the fact that *nothing* is shown on the vast majority of sites (I've yet to see one), and yet some are willing to send out letters from lawyers demanding $xxx or go to court.

I think a friendy email can make a difference.

At the end of the day it costs nothing to do and I think it could be used as a selling tool.

                                                  true.

i think to be honest people presume they can re-post.

two years ago one of my mates wanted to set up a pay site. he had 80gig hardrive of porn he had downloaded from websiteas and the net. he thought it was ok to use it to set up a paysite.

i had to tell him it was wrong.

the thing is i suspect thgats how many people think.

i think 'we' presume people know its wrong.

they can only have content if somone uploads it.

if you can put people off from uploading then it will help.

i am simply sugesting eways to put some people off.

more ways you go after them the better.

as you say you can try to go after the hosting firm.

go after them from every angle you can.

Links to news articles telling people about the action being taken against pirates. And the cases pirates are losing.

Here is a simple solution for everyone who want to participate in the war on piracy: go to pornbb.org or any other board you like, click any thread (the bigger the better), find out what program's stuff is being stolen there and send them the link.

You can do the same with torrents or even tubes. Just go on and report everything that you recognize to the copyright holders until you're tired.

If enough people will do that on a regular basic, that can make a difference.
