I'd much rather do mainstream than porn as long as I can make more than what I do in porn. I'm actually looking for ways to cross over and re-invest my porn money.
Mainstream is hard though, I have no idea how to get traffic.

Start a humor blog as your first move. There is plenty of sites to trade with in that niche, just check out www.masterstats.com for trades, and take it from there.
He is right baddog, Unless you are an SEO God or have some really unique idea like milliondollarhomepage.
But here in adult, you can simply replicate a website and make traffic.
I can make $50 a day website/blog in adult with $0 investment but in mainstream I need quite good some for advertisement and stuff to make a website with $50 a day output.
We see a lot (yes, A LOT) of mainstream turnkey sites for sale but we don't see even a 1/5th of that in adult. Most blogs/sites for sale claim some traffic and revenue. If mainstream is as easy as adult, no one there would be selling turnkey sites.
Do I need to refer you to the thread created by one of your affiliates as guide to make money in adult? And I believe that did not involve much of investment, If i am right in remembering.

Really? You need to consider that the size of Mainstream is 100 times the size of adult, so of course you will see more businesses being sold and bought in mainstream.
Adult companies dont sellout because you really don't get more than 8-12 months the revenue here. There is no reason to sell your business for 8-12 months the revenue if the site is stable. In mainstream you get years of the revenue. + It's hard to sell adult businesses because there is no one in mainstream that wants to touch them, and no one in adult who has the cash to buy'em-
MySpace is valued at $5 billion!
YouTube was bought for $1.65 billion!
Here is to consider if you want to play in mainstream:

Personally i don't know which one is harder, I'm working on my
mainstream sites now.. i'll report back to you guys later!
actually started it because I wanted a place to host some videos, and the more I looked into it, the more I realised I could blag it all with zero coding knowledge.
Then as I did, I learnt some bits on HTML/CSS and PHP, okay I can't create either from scratch but I know enough to go into a page and change bits. So I figured I'd try making sites for money rather than for interest/hobby.
I knew there were a lot of big hitters in porn, but its still the exact same obstacles that I have with my mainstream site.
You need a USP, even over the big hitters.
Its got to be different.
If its not a different idea, you need to do it better.
You need to be realistic with your abilities and targets.
Monetizing traffic is still trial and improvement.
Traffic takes time or money.
Good traffic takes time.
You start spending "hobby time" on your new 'baby' instead of just "office hours"
the list goes on. I think all web business is pretty damn similiar

Good advice there,
did you create the design for that one too?
As far as Websites and Blogs, Mainstream is easier to me.
Adult takes some ingenuity in my book, and I'm not sucking up.
I wouldn't know where to begin with a brand new Adult site, that's why I'm selling off all my domains.
Good advice there,

Thanks
Nope, everything I do/make is open source or a $$ template.
I know pretty much fuck-all indepth about any web programming. Divs make my head spin lol
Which is good, means I can concentrate on content and marketing
Ive still made MUCH more from viral video marketing than I have from Adult.
I used to have an e-commerce site that I again made from templates and script installs. Used to make a side income through there that was enough to not get a part time job. Then the flash-chip market took a nose dive around this Christmas time and it wasn't worth doing it anymore. I deleted it a while ago.

No offense, but you said you are working on your mainstream sites now. Its mean you don't have much experience in mainstream, I have been into mainstream for years and trust me you don't get more than 10-12 months of revenue for an average site. There are some other factors as well which affect the price but most of the time you dont get more than 10 months.
If you get 12 months revenue, you are lucky.

Oh' you really think that in adult no one has money to buy? In adult people simply don't buy because they can make similar site with similar revenue in less money than for what site is being sold. Because adult sites need less effort.
Did you ever saw people in mainstream trading traffic? Here in adult you can easily make a site/blog from zero to 1k a day just by trading traffic and links.

Did you read my post? I said unless you have a new/exciting idea or a lot of money you can not be successful in mainstream, and FYI YouTube and MySpace both were very exciting and new ideas of their time. They were trend setters and parents of Video Sharing and Social Networking concept.

For these, you need cash, a lot of cash. And that is what i said in my post. If you don't have cash either produce a great new concept or come back to adult shit.

Wish you good luck with it. If you have done something considerable in adult, I am sure you will know which one is harder very soon. I have much experience with both and I have stated my opinion before.

I was speaking about real businesses here and not turnkey sites, so I misunderstood you. I think that will answer all of your statements from what you posted.
ALL but one....

Do you really need a lot of cash to advertise? I've been in mainstream before in 2001 before I found adult, some of my advertising campagins did 400% on $200 dollars! THe key with mainstream is that you will not always make money direct in your hand and see a 100% or more profit. You'll have to tweak your site to make sure that it converts. But most importantly of all is that you have some high class backend products to sell to people that have bought from you before..
You can compare it with direct-mail where you can get a 1% ROI on your money on a 1,000 mailings but when you roll out the backend to your excisting customers, then you see the money roll in and your ROI is suddenly 80% , see what I mean?
Yes, Unless you don't want to exceed $10 a day.
If you want to boom to $100 a day or $500 a day, you need a lot of money to put in. But in adult you don't need.
All I want to say is 'Adult is easier than mainstream' -- with the same effort, same budget, same knowledge .. you will do better in adult than mainstream.
It's not that easy? Or you don't have the creativity?
Not enough brain farts? You love the free pics?
Curious to know.
why would I do mainstream, my theory is don't fix something thats not broken
I make a decent living off adult, why would I go mainstream. Maybe if I found god and wanted to try to make myself feel better then I might give it a try.
