All it takes for mine is a night when the moon is full. Seriously. They go utterly crazy every now and then, I look out the window, and it's a full moon.

I think it effects cats differently. I know mine gets pretty mellow on cat nip, however if he rolls in my bed of spearmint its like he sucked down 12 pixie stix and a Dr Pepper.
