because mars is the closest planet that might possibly have had life at one point. and it's the closest planet with a tolerable atmosphere, and is relatively earthlike, so what we learn there will exponentially increase our knowledge of planets and life.
and because, somewhat like the egyptians building the pyramids, it would be an acheivement that would leave it's mark on history for all time.
not to mention the tech and science spinoffs from the project, to stimulate new industries.

We already fucked up Mars millions of years ago... we came to Earth to live because we ruined our planet's natural resources and destroyed our planet's natural ability to heal itself.
Now we are returning back home to Mars? There's nothing left there for us to sustain life.

Saw his interview with Larry King. He had some great logic and blunt answer for Larry.Because Steven Hawkings said we better learn how to live in space within the next 200 years, or us humans are going to be extinct. Learning about Mars will be a huge step forward in that direction.Comment
