because mars is the closest planet that might possibly have had life at one point. and it's the closest planet with a tolerable atmosphere, and is relatively earthlike, so what we learn there will exponentially increase our knowledge of planets and life.

and because, somewhat like the egyptians building the pyramids, it would be an acheivement that would leave it's mark on history for all time.

not to mention the tech and science spinoffs from the project, to stimulate new industries.

hardly the same level of importance as dancing with the stars and quidos, I grant you.
