If the coach benches him for botching a play, no. Contrary to what you think, I instill in my son respect for others. But I do also teach him to stand up for what you believe in, and don't be afraid to let your voice be heard.

The point of my post was that rules regarding appearance for the most part are bullshit. Nothing wrong with a guy having long hair and playing sports. It's how he presents himself, and trust me, I've seen some guys with short hair present themselves far worse than guys with long hair.

And it wouldn't be telling the coach to fuck off, it would be telling the governing organization with its archaic rules that he is telling to fuck off.
