I have long hair. It doesn't affect one's ability to play. There's absolutely no fucking reason there should be a hair length regulation in any fucking sport. I used to play baseball when I was a kid. When it came time to play for my high school team, I signed up. Then I was informed that school policy said that all male athletes must keep their hair trimmed to above the shoulder. I said "Fuck you" and quit.
Now my son plays Little League baseball. He's only 9, but wants to grow his hair out like mine. So, as he takes the field, he has his little blonde tufts blowing out from under his hat. The most flack he's gotten so far is being called a "hippie." The moment he's told he has to cut his hair to play a sport, I'm telling him that he has my permission to tell the person to fuck off.

You both missed the point. If he's being discriminated against because of the length of his hair, or for any other reason, yes, I feel his entitled to express his feelings and opinion. If the coach benches him for botching a play, no. Contrary to what you think, I instill in my son respect for others. But I do also teach him to stand up for what you believe in, and don't be afraid to let your voice be heard.
The point of my post was that rules regarding appearance for the most part are bullshit. Nothing wrong with a guy having long hair and playing sports. It's how he presents himself, and trust me, I've seen some guys with short hair present themselves far worse than guys with long hair.

I beg to differ. I started growing my hair out in 6th grade. It's been long ever since. I also stand up for what I believe in. And I'm doing quite fine for myself, thank you. So you feel that in order to be successful, you need to look like everyone else and act like everyone else? "Be a part of the social norm, it's the right thing to do!"
I also instill in him that he needs to work for whatever it is he wants to acheive. There are no shortcuts. I tell him over and over that if he wants something, he has to put 100% into it and make it happen.
You guys are funny. You focus on one comment regarding a recreational sport's archaic rules, and you think you know exactly how I raise my kid. I wish I had that much insight on people, and for it to be accurate.

i'll try and restate it, your kid's long hair does not provide any intrinsic value in his life- period. he won't grow up and have a career based on his long hair. he especially won't get anything of value by telling the coach to fuck off about his long hair. quite the opposite.
ON THE OTHER HAND, playing organized sports, learning to work with others and making sacrifices DOES contribute to creating values, ethics and efforts that will contribute to your child's navigating successfully through life.

Well Weedy Williams was one of the first NFL players to have the long dreads. I remember the NFL debated for a long while on whether it was legal or not to pull on his hair during a tackle. They eventually ruled that you could LOL.
