                            Yes, your grandparents might have had it rough 'back in the day', but their "roughness" probably isn't half of a black family's. The reality probably is that your grandparents lived a difficult working class pay-check to pay-check life. Yes, that is a rough life, but it isn't complete poverty. With a working class job, you have some income - even though it is minimal. There is a possibility that you can advance and own your own property one day (which many working class immigrants eventually accomplished).

                            Unfortunately, many black people were denied work because of the de facto racism, so they were 'stuck' in a ghetto lifestyle - complete poverty. Also, the white immigrants that came usually came alone. This afforded them the advantage of being single or without children. On the other hand, black people were already in the country for hundreds of years and had families and children living in ghettos. It was probably difficult for a black male child to get up and get the "American Dream" primarily because he had to help support his family.

                            Overall, this is a huge issue and is very difficult to discuss on a messageboard, but black people really are at a disadvantage when you look at the situation. It is a case of the whole being equal to the sum of its parts - eternally.
