Friend who wants to learn to make a web page

A friend came to me yesterday asking how to learn to make a web page. He just wants to do something very basic and I would assume with a WSIWYG program. Where do you even start with this sort of thing? I can barely even remember how I learned because it just sort of happened over time.

Forget about any of that, show them wordpress and wash your hands, I've done that half a dozen times and it works everytime. Even my 65 year old mother can figure that out.

Btw, is that "friend" actually you?

I would agree. With the amount of free themes, plugins, and tutorials out there it would be the simplest thing to do.

Not unless I am a 45 year old man from Wales.

I thought about wordpress but wasn't sure if that would end up with me having to help them maintain a blog and hosting. I suppose I could just install it for them but even that worries me that I then become the one actually running things.

I got my start there... In 2 weeks I created a surf videos site that actually sold videos. Was pretty amazing at the time.

I usually go to the bookstore, pick out a dozen or so books on a topic I want to learn about, go home and start reading. It's cheaper than trying to take a course every time you need to add a skill.

I am not sure how versed your friend is, but I used: http://www.webmonkey.com/tutorials/

many moons ago. I checked out the site and has gotten quite a bit advanced over time, but I still see some very basic stuff in there. I hope it helps.

Like an idiot, I have started to write him a step by step 'this is how you use notepad to write the basics' tutorial. It is how I learned. Then, I will give him links to a ton of youtube videos and tutorial sites I have learned for him to take the ball and run with it.
