If you're going for quality then Quicktime and mp4 is the way to go. For sheer numbers of users with compatible players on their computers then its wmv. I personally use a mac so I have Quicktime and prefer it, many pc users aren't hip to why it's a better player because they are forcefed windows media.

PC user but must agree quicktime kicks ass. To bad its so underrated by webmasters, would not be hard for us to force it on users.

its not for porn, but for Conference webcasts.
BUT - if I had a paysite with large videoclips, I would use that format. On tgp gallerys I would still use mpeg-1 since 99% can view that without any installations needed.
When the member have payed to get great quality, I would only server it in the best format, and that is Mpeg4 if you ask me :-)
Personally, I enjoy mpeg format, it'll play on apple, (personally I like apple, but most people tell me to fuck off) and it'll play on Windows media and all that stuff. Anything else and you're compromizing compatibility. Why not go universal?
What Mpeg-1 not even an option anymore?:-) for campatibility and pleasure i found users want mpeg-1. For ease and file size to webmasters WMV is great, but users don't like not being able to fast forward. usually sites that have WMV also have quicktime even though microcrap makes mac WMV player now
and it runs on:
Mac OS X, v10.1.3 and later (server and proxy)
Red Hat Linux 7.x (server and proxy)
Solaris 8 (server and proxy)
Windows NT Server/Windows 2000 Server (server)

If your goal is to maximize target auidince, why would stream anything else? Real or divx, i could sort of understand, but Quick Time??
Just doesn't make sense
my
because there is a Internet explorer quicktime plugin, and then you embed the movie into the page.
