question about house breaking puppy.. HELP

ok i got my new puppy last night. so far got him to stop chewing on me, and thought him how to sit, & come, and also to walk on leash..

getting him to stop biting others/jumping on them is a different story.. the trainer coming today should help..

question though, i live on 21st floor of a downtown building, this morning when i woke up, as soon as i opened the door to go out, he peed on the lobby carpet on my floor..

How am i supposed to house break a dog while living on the 21st floor, and when the whole floor is covered with carpet..

Should i get those fake grass stuff and put it on the balcony, and teach him to use that? hoping that in a few weeks he can just switch to real grass?

I know what I would do, but there would be some that would say it does not work, even though it obviously does.

Being in an apartment has to really suck for a dog, so at least let him use your balcony to pee on. Maybe when he gets older you can train him to pee down on people walking by.

Housebreaking a dog should not take more than a few days.

well its a small tiny puppy he is ~2lbs 12 weeks old

ya ive taken him outside every 2hrs but he barely does it.. problem is i have no yard.. i gotta walk outside my door, wait a min or two for elevator, wait a minute to get downstairs, then walk outside..

i could house break if i had a door leading straight to a yard, but from talking to a few other dog owners here, its not easy at all teaching to dog to hold it still till we get downstairs/outside..

21st floor? Hmm. Well, I think you're either going to have to make use of that balcony somehow OR you're going to have to set your alarm and GET YOUR ASS UP EARLY every day and take your dog outside BEFORE it's too late and he's pissing on carpets etc.

Scold him when he pees indoors, praise him when he does it where he's supposed to (outside). Do that consistantly and it shouldn't take long for him to get the drift and start "asking" to go outside (by going to the door, coming to you and whining, etc)

That is a piss poor environment to have a dog...pun intended. My first question would be...is there any possible way for the puppy to fall from the balcony?

nope.. too high up.. and he is too small.. 100% impossible.. the windows/doors of the balcony are like 5ft high.. he is 2 inches..

ya ive been good on taking him out.. BUT he just doesnt get the concept of outside.. cuz once i step outside the door, "he is outside", even though he is still inside the building..

thats my problem.. i gotta open my door, go to the elevator area, wait, go down 21 floors, then walk through a huge ass lobby, before im outside...

This good example of why people who live on 21st floor apartments shouldn't have dogs. You should move.

you obviously have never lived in a city. You should move.

As far as training a dog. Nothing beats a cage. Also got to have structure. Might pee once or twice or three times on the carpet. That is life. Have to make sure it knows what it did was wrong and just keep on repeating the walk roughly same time every day. Once you get them on a schedule they are good. It will take a while 6months to 1 year because a dog will not be a pain in the ass.

ya he is being crate trained.. and for the idiots there are dozens of dogs in my building who are doing fine... it just depends on the breed... i have 1400SQFT and a balcony, its plenty of space for a doggy his size/breed.. i just need to get him to pee/poop outside..

Like I said, you scold him when he does it inside, and keep putting him out (on the balcony?) where the 'potty patch' thing is located, until he gets into the habit of asking to go out there to do his thing.

Is there a way to baby-proof the railing around your balcony so there's no way for him to fall?

Btw, I'd order the large size of that potty patch thing no matter what size your dog is. Looks to be a good gadget for apartments for sure.

no what i mean is after makign him do it on potty patch.. how do u then make him do it outside.. isnt the whole point of housebreaking to make him do outside..

balcony has no way he can fall out.. the railing is really really high.. its at least 5ft... he is 2 inches.. and i never leave him alone, ever.. im always there..

i work from home so im home all day/all week.. except if im running errands or clubbing..

make him a place to pee in the house, use a magic word to command him to pee, make sure to use it when u need and make sure he knows where he should piss/take a poop, give him treats every time he does the right thing. it takes around 6 months to potty train.

Okay I'll try to explain it better. You potty train him with that patch thing on your balcony. But you also need to walk him, at least a couple of times a day. 3-5 times is optimal.

When you walk him you should have a spot for him to do his thing close-by, no? Take him there every time you walk him, and that's where you let him sniff around until he does his bidness. He'll notice eventually that he's not being scolded for doing it there (or on the patch thing on your balcony), but he DOES get scolded for doing it on the floor inside.

Like I said, over time and with consistancy on your part he will catch on to where the safe places are for him to "go".

                                  Better?

Obviously it's a huge minus you living in an apartment so high up, but it's a huge PLUS that you work from home and are there a lot of the time.

thank u very much that made sense.. so far he has peed twice outside, poop outside once, and peed inside once.. so he is 3/4

lets hope trend continues.. it helps that i take him out every 3hrs

I live in a city of 2 million and own a dog, but in all reality would you want to travel 21 stories all the time? My dog goes outside quite a bit, dogs like that kind of stuff. High rise apartments are no place for any dog, big or small.

Plus if the guy lets his dog piss on the balcony that's going to smell, people usually like to hang out on balconies; when it smells like piss cause your little patch of grass with a piss dish under it is stinking people aren't going to want to even have a cigarette out there.

I have paid attention to my new pup. 5 months old and atm the last 2 days I woke up the place was mint, took him out and he did his business.

Your pup will need attention, consistency and guidance. Give him this while socializing him/her as much as you can and you should not be in any trouble.

Sounds silly, but a lapband, or a small diaper. If the dog was a girl you could just use a diaper, but with a male dog the diapers usually don't come that far forward. Its a short time thing till he gets the drift of it, but can save you some clean up headaches until he is house broken. Remember puppies don't understand right away that what they are doing is bad. Its natural for them especially with it being a male, he wants to mark his environment as "his". I currently have 3 dogs. One 15 year old dog half lab half terrier I've had since 6 weeks old, a "peek-a-pom" pom and pekinese, and a new half terrier half schnauzer (we think) 3 month old puppy. The peek a pom is a male and was terrible to break. Most stubborn dog I have ever had.
This new puppy is a girl and she is simple to break, and pretty much not having any incidents already, and I've only had her less than a week. However I do put a diaper on her before bedtime just in case since puppies have tiny little bladders, and she isn't 100% broken yet and can still get confused. They do sell puppy diapers at places like Tractor supply pet stores etc. HOWEVER just get cheap infant diapers and cut a hole in it for the tail. Dollar store has cheap diapers that are like 6 or 7 for 36 diapers. This shouldnt be a long time solution, just a helper. Dogs don't like getting pee on themselves so they won't enjoy peeing in them. In the situation you are in, might be best viable option to keep your carpets from stinking till he is house trained.

New puppy and her 15 year old "mommy"

I litter box trained my English bulldog and had the litterbox on the balcony. It worked perfect. I bought one of those doggy door inserts for sliding glass doors. They also make larger litter boxes for dogs. It took about 2 weeks to train him. If he poops in the home move his poop to the litter box then pick him up and set him in the litter box. Praise him. Do this every time HD has an accident in your house.
They make dog litter that is made from absorbant paper pellets.

getting him to stop biting others/jumping on them is a different story.. the trainer coming today should help..

question though, i live on 21st floor of a downtown building, this morning when i woke up, as soon as i opened the door to go out, he peed on the lobby carpet on my floor..

How am i supposed to house break a dog while living on the 21st floor, and when the whole floor is covered with carpet..

Should i get those fake grass stuff and put it on the balcony, and teach him to use that? hoping that in a few weeks he can just switch to real grass?
I got one of those fake grass things for training my dogs (Miniature Long Haired Chihuahuas), and it does work. One suggestion that I found to work best is getting those puppy pads for under the grass. After a while, remove the fake grass and just use the pads. The pads are disposable so it makes cleanup easy.

Best of luck and I hope your dogs are on the smaller side, or the mess will be large.
