People flock to dishonest people for some reason.
I could be completely honest about something and it would go mostly ignored, another person comes along with some bullshit promising the world and people will swarm to it like flies to shit.
I guess it's the average stupidity of humans, but because of this the honest people get tired of being ignored and give up trying to help, meanwhile the dishonest are free to flourish.
