My truck got towed -- possibly illegally?

it blows having my truck taken from me. and it also blows having to pay about $300 to get it back! talk about throwing money away...

saturday my truck got an orange sticker that says my auto is not registered.

sunday night it was towed.

my vehicle IS registered but did not have the registration sticker on the plate. the DMV is not open on the weekends so there is no way for me to have rectified the issue.

what do you guys say .. do i have a case?

If you're dealing with THE MAN you probably don't have a case... Where is the sticker? If it's supposed to be on the plate get ready to fork over the dough.

can you show the sticker got stolen? if you have purchase docs before the tow date and can show it maybe got stolen then you have a case.

if you were too stupid to put it on - pay the fine

thats an interesting idea. however, i am sure thats not the first time that idea has been put fourth here in las vegas. a stolen sticker seems like such an obvious explaination. i will go to the dmv to get a copy of my already valid registration and also acquire stickers for my plates. before hand, i will attempt to remove a sticker from someone else plate to see how firm the glue is and see whether or not if it leaves a ghost mark on the plate. then i will have a better gauge if the stolen sticker story has potential.

I had the same thing happen to me. I have an old Jeep and it didn't run for a few years. I kept the registration and insurance currrent but I didn't put the sticker on the plate thinking I wasn't driving it so I didn't need it and it would just make it easy for somebody to steal the plate and use it.

I was living in an apartment complex and the manager left a note on the Jeep saying it had to have a current plate or it would be towed. People were always leaving notes on it wanting to buy it so this one time I didn't even bother to walk over and look at the note.

I came home from work and noticed the Jeep was gone. My first thought was it had been stolen. I called the manager's office and they explained what happened and they had it towed. By the time I got to the Jeep the impound and towing fees had climbed to $750.

I found a super nice old mechanic that let me have it towed to his shop and he let me keep it in the back for free for another year until I was ready to put some money into it and get it running again. I've still got the Jeep and it's my favorite thing to drive. It was a stupid costly mistake but I didn't let it get the best of me.

if you had a valid registration at the time then all you have to do is prove that your registration was valid, sticker or not. you still will have to pay the impound fees for the tow, that shit can get pricy quick so the quicker you get it out the better my car was impounded for 2 days once cost me $350.

Okay, because this makes you feel so good and I love you, I'm going to make you feel even BETTER.

My tag renewal comes up in July of every year. Last July, I went to the courthouse, stood in line, paid my money, and got my new 2007 sticker. When I got to the parking lot, I went to the back of my car to put the sticker on over the old one and stopped when I saw "2005". I drove more and put more miles on my car that year, than any other year since I've had a driver's license.

And I never got pulled over a single time.

lol, some good stories here! i dont feel so bad.

here is my story...

got my plates and my stickers. when it came time to renew, i instead got vanity plates. while those were been made i moved across town. my new vanity plates where mailed to my old address and bounced to the local dmv office. this caused a delay. in the end i rushed to the office to get my plates before i would be driving illegally. in the dmv parking lot i took off my plates and put the new ones on without switching the sticker or getting a new one. i am not customed to putting reg stickers on plates so it never crossed my mind in all the excitement in getting to the dmv at the last minute.

and so i have driven nearly a year, across county twice, through border checkouts and getting pulled over all without my sticker on my plate. furthermore, at some point i lost my registration paper as well. the border police and the state trooper didnt mind. they called in to check.

wow.

well, yesterday i went to pick up proof of registration so i can fetch my truck. i was not able to simply do that. my registration has been suspended since september due to insurance lapse. $250 fine.

i think i will be able to get a ride thurday or friday to pick up my truck. ~$320.

i better get back to work!

yup
think of me as someone who focuses more on computers than life...

my insurance lapsed for 3wks apparently. i dont remember that. maybe the insurance company made an error, but probably not.

anyway, it's all taken care of. i have insurance. i have lifted the registration suspension. however, my truck is still in the pound at $18 a day.
