so it has camera, speakers and a usb hub built in? anything else? not sure that justifies $500 price premium...

            That's why I didn't buy one. I got a Wacom Cintiq 21 ux for $2k instead.

I wanted to buy a second monitor for my iMac 27" and looked at this monitor, but decided against it. First, its only 24" and doesn't match my iMac. The main reason was the price. For a few hundred dollars more I could get a second iMac27". Even cooler, you can control both via a single wireless keyboard & mouse, and "drag and drop" files from one machine just by literally clicking an icon on 1 screen, and dragging it to the other. MUCH cooler than paying $900 for this screen.

I'm sitting in front of a new Dell IPS 23" that was $280 on sale. The Apple is LED-backlit and this one is CCFL so I suppose it depends on if that's worth the extra $$$ to you.

Is that a Mac only feature or is there a PC program that does something similar? I run two desktops and it would be really handy to be able to drag-and-drop like that.

It's killing me to see people complain about the price for that display when I bought my 22" Cinema Display back around 2002 for $2,300

The Apple 24" LED display is by far the best monitor I've had to date. I plug my Macbook Pro in and forget I'm really on a laptop.

You can use the laptop's screen for free.

It's not all about quality, it's about convenience. If you have a MBP and work at an actual office, you can have one of these at the office, one at home, and just shuttle your laptop between. (consistency between locations, and everything is still on one system, so no syncing = time saved) This thing also powers & charges your MBP while it's connected, so you don't need to pack a power supply cord unit with you. Convenience co$t$.

You can always get a $180 buck monitor and carry that along with your laptop I suppose, or just use the laptop screen.

Or you can buy 2 $180 monitors and do the exact same thing that you mentioned above.

So this monitor charges the laptop. You can buy a second charger for 20 bucks.

Does it do anything else? Why is it $700?

                              Ummm a MagSafe is $80, not $20.

Yeah, you can get two $180 monitors. You can get no monitors. You can do anything you want really.

Why is it $799? Because that's what Apple charges.

                                  I just sold a MagSafe for $20.

So your paragraph above about why the $800 monitor is better had no real purpose? LOL.

Okay, well a new MagSafe is $80 bucks. What you sold yours for is irrelevant. Look on eBay, maybe you'll find one of these monitors on the cheap too, but new they are $799.

Like I said, it's a convenience thing. You don't need an external screen for a laptop, they have one built in. "Better" or not is in the eyes of the consumer. I find Apple products to be of good quality, but that doesn't mean I buy everything they offer.

A 24inch LCD for $180 will most likely be a TN panel. I can't stand TN panels, the viewing angles are crap for one thing. I tried using one for awhile and if I didn't sit "perfectly" in front of it the colors would change on the screen. Most people don't care or don't even notice it because they've used them so much. Cheap panels also cause banding too which really pisses me off. But you can still get a 24inch IPS panel for 200-300 bucks. Although if it's LED backlit that could also raise the price a bit.

All LCD monitors are overpriced though, you can get a large TV with a good panel in the 400-600 range.

Exactly. I picked up a 52" hdtv for $600, last year.

The thing to remember here is, not everyone can afford Apple products, and not everyone is able to justify the expense of Apple products. If they were "affordable" to everyone, they'd be just another pc that will break and need replacing in a year or two, (or much less).

It's all personal preference. But I bet the ones complaining about the expense also all own iPhones with hefty monthly plans.

Oh, and don't forget.... the $180 monitor better have a MiniDisplayPort connector on it, or it's a paperweight until you acquire the proper adapters.

I'm not sure. The program I use is Teleport

I don't see PC version but maybe another company makes one.

If they were "affordable" to everyone, they'd be just another pc that will break and need replacing in a year or two, (or much less).

It's all personal preference. But I bet the ones complaining about the expense also all own iPhones with hefty monthly plans.

Good point. My only beef was that I didn't really see the value in buying a $900 monitor when I could buy a full iMac with a 21.5" screen for $400 more, or a full iMac with a 27" screen for $800 more.
