I own a beautiful 4-bedroom brick Victorian... the only thing that sucks is that it's 150 years old (no insulation) and has a dirt floor in the basement...

Can't you pour some concrete over the dirt floor? It's not that expensive to do.
This thread needs pics! I like to see all the big players mansions. I don't have any good pics of the outside of my house. Might have to take some tomorrow.
i bought my first house when i was 21 or 22. i just moved into a new house about a month or so ago. once you get used to your house you realize its not big enough. hopefully it doesnt happen again, moving is a bitch.
As you get older you start downsizing. My current house is almost 1/2 the size of my last one. SO much easier to take care of (not that I do, lol).

heres some pics of my house right while i was moving in, i finished a lot of stuff since there but its almost done. i did 75% of the work myself and redid pretty much everything in the house.
1. I always move; I don't know where I'll be in 3 months. I have yet to spend more than 18months in the same house.
2. Real estate in Japan loses value over time, it doesn't appreciate. So if I buy a $400k condo, in 10 years it's likely it'll be worth $200k... if I'm lucky.
Sorta both. At the moment, my wife and I are renting the house we picked up a couple of months ago, but under the premise that we'd buy it in six months, which we plan to do. It's a quaint little 3 bedroom house in the suburbs of Isabela, PR with a small 1 bedroom apartment attached to it, which we rented out for four months. I have a picture of it on my cellphone but I haven't taken any with my digital yet; we're still doing lots of work to the place. We eventually plan on buying up cheap properties in Isabela and Camuy, fixing them up, then reselling for 2x-3x the original buying price.
Everyone always told me I needed to buy a house instead of renting and I never understood why. Now I do. When you suddenly discover your house is worth twice what you owe on it, well, it's party time.
We were looking to buy about 3 years ago and ended up building instead. By paying about 20% more than the existing places we looked at we were able to get a larger house with exactly what we wanted.
The cycle will start over shortly, we've purchased a larger block and will be building a house roughly twice the size of our existing one. I can't say that all of the "appreciation work" that has happened with this house will be for nothing, because it gets us a leg up, but once we move we'll be back to square one as if it was our first home, first mortgage payment......
Bought my house 18 months ago. 22 years old at the time and it felt weird. All my friends were still at University or still wondering what to do with their lives and I was buying a house LOL
Glad I done it tho. Better than pissing my money up against a wall.
same here, only i did it at 21 ... thinking of selling it and getting a bigger place, 3200 sq.ft. isn't big enough for me... i want 3 car garage instead of 2 we'll see in few years how it goes
We own a condo 4 bedrooms/3 baths, its very big in fact because the builder built them so large .It drove him into bankruptcy when they were built 20 yrs ago. Within 5 yrs want to buy a free standing house, dont like living by committee.
Like 10 years ago my parents bought a small cottage in a suburban beach area (30 mins away from town). Now that piece of land costs around $200k. I've demolished pretty much everything there was there and now am building a big house from scratch. And to believe they've bought it for $4k or something, damn.
The house itself is on a small hill which used to be the shore of a river. Now the lake is something around 200m away from the hill which results in an amazing view. Just incredible.
It will be funny though if the river comes back to the hill where I'm currently setting up a sauna-house.

I'm selling early next year too. Want something bigger and another investment. Gonna buy a new build house. Its the best way to make instant profit over here as they sell them at the lowest possble price. 1 year later you sell it for minimum of 20% more.
I went to HS with a kid whose parents had an "under the dune" beach house in Ponte Vedra FL. He used to tell us "I'm going to mow the roof this weekend"
Hahah. Cool
We went to a place in British Columbia called "Old Country Market" where they have a bunch of buildings and there's grass growing on the roofs and goats walk around all day munching away at the roofs. Neat little shops and a cool place also!
Dual Home Owner ;-) I own a 3 story 5 bedroom, 2 bath house in the Netherlands
and I recently bought newly build house close to Barcelona in Spain.
2 story, 4 bed, 2 bath, large living with glass wall facing terrace
pool and very noice 1200 Square meter garden.
Can't wait till it's ready and go to spend some time to recharge the battery.

in my area builder sells them for the same price (or even higher) as used houses go for :/ (caz there's not much land left here)... but ya, i got my first house, in one year it appreciated 30k (sold it), moved into the second one and already see people sell exact same house on my street for 50k more... once i pay it off I want to get another one... I was also thinking once I pay it off, to sell it and to buy something smaller, and with money left to buy a condo closer to the city, not sure what Im ganna do
I'm a home owner as well. Bought my condo when I was 23 in December. Have money on another one that will be built by the end of 2008, early 2009. A nice high rise in downtown San Diego.

I'm currently renting.
I sold my house of 7 years last year. I'm not sure if I am going to move north or stay in Florida, so I'll be renting for at least a year.
My house was a good investment. Sold for exactly twice what I bought it for originally;-)
